just like when you spend money you don't have

Throwing money at a problem rarely fixes it and so too does throwing time at a project; eventually it will catch up to you as you build deficits in other important areas of your life, just like when you spend money you don't have. This book encourages you to accept that your time is finite and that you should budget and invest it properly on the most important and impactful things in your life. Easier said than done, but this book teaches you how to not only identify what is important, but also on how to identify (and fix) those habits and ways of thinking that compromise our decisions on how we should be spending our time.

That being said, there are several specific things about this book that I like a lot:
- It is a small and easy read; gets right to the point and easy to revisit later.
- It is actionable and practical. You can take this book and use it without guesswork; it says what you need to do in plain English.
- It holistically addresses the problem from your reactions to stress to your daily routines and actions. Using this book you will realize that you are not lazy, stupid or unproductive (in my case) but rather you are just allocating your time poorly.
- Lastly, it is grounded in reality and it paces you appropriately; you never feel overwhelmed by what you have to do.

"Why Are You Awake?" Alarm is Just the Tip of the Iceberg

Even if you got only one thing out of Elizabeth Grace Saunders’s How to Invest Your Time Like Money, her idea of a Why Are You Awake? alarm makes the 75-page ebook well worth the purchase.

But there’s a lot more sage advice packed into the highly readable offering by HBR Press.

Saunders’s basic premise is a simple but compelling one: “You need to learn the skills to invest your time like money.” She elaborates:

"When you invest your time as if it were money, you look at the reality of how much time you have available and the truth of activities’ time cost. You then make decisions that allow you to get out of time debt. And with this balanced budget in hand, you can then set up the structure to consistently invest your time in what’s most important."

Five chapters and an inspiring epilogue help the reader to consider how to best use her or his time in the service of identified values and priorities:

1. Take Control of Your Time and Your Life
2. Identify Your Time Debt
3. Create a Base Schedule
4. Set Up Automatic Time Investment
5. Maximize Your Time ROI
Epilogue: Remember What You’re Working For

I’ve read enough time management books to nearly expect the kind of introductory statement in the first chapter: “Most time management methodologies fail….” However, Saunders really does offer a unique angle on time management, writing, “Time, like money, must be invested to work for you now and support your ideal future.” This is what sets Saunders’s book apart from other task management writing. She boldly begins: “What will need to change is you.”

She helps the reader address psychological “barriers to success,” such as accepting the role of victim of other people’s expectations, playing the rescuer (and therefore taking on other people’s tasks), or even somehow thinking “a sane and sustainable schedule with (gasp!) free time” is an undeserved luxury.

I can imagine a hurried executive reading, “Accept the past and forgive yourself” and balking at an emotions-based approach, but I think Saunders is right on the money. We can’t fix how we manage our time without taking a careful, hard look at what’s behind our time-spending (and time-wasting habits).

So only after a full chapter devoted to examining the ways we undermine our effectiveness–and suggesting practical ways to combat this–does Saunders write:

"Now you’re mentally and emotionally primed to authentically evaluate your time investment. So, it’s time to take a serious look at whether you’re in time debt and, if so, how you can move toward a balanced budget."

For the rest of the book, Saunders serves as the temporal equivalent of a financial advisor. What turned me on to the book in the first place is an excerpt HBR posted, where Saunders suggests a “formula to stop you from overcommitting your time.”

Chapters 2 through 5 then walk the reader through setting both a daily and weekly “time budget” and schedule. Saunders suggests how to help the actual match the envisioned. (One juicy nugget, via Arianna Huffington: “You can complete a project by dropping it.”) There is a difference, Saunders notes, between, “Do I have to do this?” and, “Do I have to do this now?”

Even as the author deftly guides the reader through the nuts and bolts of scheduling, she continues to keep an eye on some of the deep-down causes that prevent us from spending time well:

"[Y]ou need to uncover what’s at the bottom of your emotional resistance so that you can let go of it and make time investment decisions that serve your greatest and highest good."

Each chapter ends with a really helpful summary checklist, making it easy to translate ideas into actionable progress.

One thing that seems to be missing in this book is more specific advice on how to tally how much time various tasks will take. After all, part of the issue is that we often underestimate how long it will take to complete a task. Saunders does give advice here (a section called, “Improve Your Estimation of Time Costs”), though it is largely of the just estimate via trial-and-error variety.

That said, there may simply not be much else to do but to follow her sound advice to track one’s time to be able to “look back at the totals for similar past projects for data on realistic estimates.”

Even in book form Saunders is interpersonally and psychologically sensitive and insightful. And she so often calls the reader back–in an inspiring way–to the big picture:

"In the end, getting the best return on your investment is not about whether you got the most tasks done but about whether you put time and effort into what’s most important to you."

By all means, go download this book right now. Schedule five 20-minute blocks to read it (this is what I did, and it worked great). And then schedule some more time to sit down with your calendar and put into practice all that Saunders recommends.

It's easy to feel overwhelmed...take back control!

I think everyone feels overcommitted at times. Too many internal and external expectations for their energy, and just not enough hours in the day to service themselves and others. Elizabeth's book is a great guide for stepping back and determining what's actually important, and then building a time management strategy that aligns with those core values.

My big takeaways were:

You have to commit - You can try every "system" in the world (trust me I have), but none of them will work if you don't have the discipline to stick with them.
Find what fits for you - there is no "one way" you have to take the time to observe and understand yourself, only then can you determine the best practices that work for YOU
Be realistic - I often think I can pack more in than possible. I love how the author forces you to step back and take an objective look at how much time you actually have, and then use that as a baseline for setting expectations for yourself.
Don't try to be perfect, just try to get better - If perfection doesn't exist in nature, then it's definitely not something you or I can achieve. Don't focus on being perfect, just try to be better than the person you were the day before (applies to life as well as time)

What makes the author's book so impactful is that it includes both the theory and the practice. Instead of giving a "one size fits all" system, she talks about the values you should emphasize when thinking about time management. Actually giving you the tools to create your own system. But instead of leaving you to figure out for yourself she supplies several examples of actual implementation (Theory + Practice).

Certainly a book I'll go back to as I continue to refine my own time management skills.

Don't waste your money on this book. It is so oversimplified & leaves out what you need most from the original book which is the actual strategies to begin a simple meditation practice.
I will never buy another Instaread summary.
(The original) Dan Harris' book is well worth every penny.

Decent read; Good advice

Normally, I don't go for these kinds of self-help books. However, the thing I enjoyed about this one was it took us to the time before Mr. Harris started his panic attacks. The stress from the events of his life, such as his job, reporting in a war zone, and drug use, all contributed to his attacks.
While I may not agree with everything the author says or implies (ie; the very hypocritical Ted Haggard, and how Mr. Harris admired him for it), I find that his journey to find peace within himself was very realistic. What I mean is that, although Mr. Harris had fame and was working his dream job, he had the same struggles that millions of people struggle with every day.
This summary gave me the keys points I needed to help myself find some inner peace and deal with stress by being compassionate and open-minded.

So Full of Promise

Advertising "Principles and Experience" with software build tools, the
author demonstrates a surprisingly sophomoric depth of
understanding. Most of the book is presented at a very high level with
limited practical presentation.

Chapter 08 discusses the SCons tool with a section on debugging bad
builds. The --debug=presub command-line switch is introduced and
output presented. A particular environment variable is mentioned and
then some portion of the list of all environment variable definitions
in SCons is printed. The actual environment variable presented is
never found in the list, the result is never plugged into the template
command-line, and the "problem" is never debugged. The level of
understanding seems very much that of someone who has run the on-line
tutorial.

The feeling of reiterated tutorial continues in Chapter 10 on
Eclipse. I can figure out the panes of the workspace or else I can
fire up the Guided Tour that ships with the product. There is no need
to spend several pages on helping me figure out where source code is
displayed.

Chapter 06 focuses on GNU Make. The idea of a .flags file is mentioned
as a way to capture dependencies on command-line flags. Where is an
example? Is it better practice to have a .flags file per directory or
per source file? How do .flag files interact with the number of file
reads done by a build system (the topic of Chapter 19 when talking
about speeding up a build)?

There are a handful of editing errors and another, more annoying,
handful of technical errors. There is a discussion of running gdb
(why, in a book on building, do I get a tutorial on gdb? Shallow
coverage of a broad range of tools is on the menu) and the explanation
of the "list" command is incorrect.

For transparency's sake: I have maintained build tools for a
moderately sized research code base (using GMake), I have built tools
that interface with the Visual Studio project management system, and I
have taught software engineering for a decade. I may not have been the
intended audience and the (overly) broad, shallow coverage may be just
what a beginner needs (though I don't think so).

The book receives two rather than one star because it did cover tools
that I had not personally used previously (SCons), it taught me the
difference between makedepend and gxx -MM, and it mentioned Flex and
Bison. To paraphrase the book on most of the coverage, however,
"Unfortunately, this brief description of [build systems] barely
covered the basic features." And that isn't what "Practice and
Experience" promises.

A Gap-Filling Book for Software Developers Too

Build system are often viewed as merely a script to compile the code. However there are much more to it. Read this book you'll find out. As an editorial review says, this book is also for developers in addition to build engineers.

As the book starts with, a survey showed that it is common developers losing 20~30% productivity due to build related problems. My personal estimate, at one of my previous work we spent more than 30% of time dealing with build breakages. Sometimes the problems are caused by the build system itself, some other times they are due to misuse of the system. It's worth for developers to learn the build system thus to avoid messing up with the build system.

For large software it is very difficult to figure out the dependencies among the components. To my view, if it is a C program, the only place the complete dependency information can be found is in the build system. Figuring out dependencies helps developers to better design/code/debug their software. To do so you'll have to know about the build system, or you may even need to fix the build system so you can get the information dumped for you.

I use code generation in my coding practice so that I can manage more logic in code and avoid tedious repetitive work [see Martin Fowler's DSL book Domain-Specific Languages (Addison-Wesley Signature Series (Fowler)) for more on this topic]. I also generate tests from the source code. To generate code the triggers have to be incorporated into the build system. Had I read this book I would have done my work more effectively.

Even if you are on a small project, often the code needs to be configured and customized for different versions and platforms, or products. The conditional customization part, can often either be in the source code like by C ifdef primitives or in the makefiles. Knowing the build system gives the developers an alternative way of thinking where it is best to put those conditional parts. Sometimes we track the definition of a predefined macro, and it may end up in a makefile. This is the time you have to understand the makefile to know how exactly that macro is defined and used. For this reason, I would say the build system is part of the source code implementation, knowing the build system is essential to the developers.

I give this book a 5-star rating because in some sense it fills the gap between developers and build engineers, and it brings an often ignored area to attention of developers. More principles, less experience

This book is a decent introduction to the world of build systems. Overall I expected more depth from it, and felt I barely got my money's worth, but it could be perfect for someone with less experience with complex build systems who wants to learn more about the field or got tasked with choosing and implementing a build system for a project.

It starts with a high-level discussion of concepts that are common across build systems. Then it goes into an overview of five common build systems - make, scons, cmake, Ant and the GUI-based Eclipse. Generally I felt this is the weakest part of the book as it does not go into depth with any of those tools, but it is useful if one wants to compare how several systems handle a common, simple scenario, and the praise/criticism/evaluation section towards the end of each tool's description is a nice summary. For a detailed manual of one of the covered build tools, tool documentation and other in-depth books on separate tools are a far better choice.

Part III, "Advanced topics", is a misnomer - it should be called "Beyond the basics". Once again the discussion becomes more abstract and covers dependencies and related issues, "metadata" (any products that are not the final executables - documentation, tests, etc.), managing tools, and towards the end two topics that are the most important - how to improve build speed and manage build size. I would not call any topic discussed to actually be "advanced" - that would be, for example, an in-depth analysis of an existing complex make-based build framework, or a careful dissection, with reasoning and trade-offs, of a big build system of an existing open source project, none of which are to be seen in this book.

Some parts simply do not belong to the topic at hand and seem to be added solely for expansion of size of the volume. For example, the whole chapter of installer systems, including a complete walk-through of creating a NSIS project, would better be left out. Version management is also discussed in far more detail in other books, but there at least there is a related tangent of what should and should not be stored in source control.

Kindle Edition is flawed.

I bought the Kindle edition of this for an online Project Management course I'm taking towards my masters. Previously I've used other online books via Vitalsource Bookshelf. I've now reached the end of the course and overall I am not satisfied with the Kindle version for the following reasons:

- missing content. Numerous diagrams are labeled but missing. Example: figure 8.1

- search mechanism seems suspect. I can't prove it is broken, but it never does a good job of finding terms that should be in the book.

- PAGE NUMBERS ARE MISSING! This is near the worst. The Kindle-proprietary "location" is given, but page numbers are not. Which means that page number based reading assignments given in my class are useless. I realize Kindle pages change size depending on font and such, but Amazon needs to find a way to carry over the real book page numbers for reference. The "location" numbers are near useless.

- highlighting is supported, and the user interface is actually sort of nice, but you can only highlight in yellow, and you cannot search for words in your highlighted text alone.

I will continue to buy books to read on my Kindle for fun, but educational books are off the list until Kindle handles them better.

The premier referece for Earned Value

This is the premier reference on the subject of Earned Value in Project Management. It is scholarly enough but not so academic as to interfere with a sufficient understanding of the subject in a practical, daily application.
The examples are real world and can be adopted and/or adapted to any project.
I recommend it as the first book to read on the subject since it may be the last.
This is a very good source for studying for professional certifications in project management, cost engineering and related areas.

This book is Great ... and the Audible version is Wonderful ... Transformative

Nearly fifty years ago I was an Army Medic (MOS_91_C) who served over two years in what is now called a 20 bed trauma intensive care unit located in Camp Zama Japan ... the US Army Central Command location. This trauma unit was always full ... there were rarely empty beds. The patients arriving were unstable wounded soldiers being evacuated out of Vietnam; all types of wounds which could be expected in combat except for burns were treated in our unit. The high esprit d'corps experienced by all of our staff ... top to bottom ... was of the type hinted at in the TV series MASH. At the end of my enlistment I consciously strived to place my part in creating what was being done to the Vietnamese people as far as possible from my mind and my hoped-for post war life. I did not expect gratitude; nor did I experience any American gratitude. My biggest lifetime error of bio-psychic-social existence was my presupposition that I had not been wounded i.e. traumatized by my US Army service. I spend nearly 5000 hours in a river of human trauma and I never saw that I had become one of them ... my service buddies. I still cry when I recall the death of Clyde Wenrick, a young warrior who had been shot in the gut and had lived with and been cared for by us for months ... on and off the verge of death. I was sucking his recently eaten breakfast of eggs and bacon out of his abdomen ... he was holding the hands of one of the women corpmen and looking at her face. He said: I love you Mommy; and he quietly died.

It was only after having read "The Evil Hours" that I find that I can hold and tolerate the FACT that I too had been wounded and traumatized in my work to care for others. My life, my mind and my body had been altered without my permission. And I've lived with that without understanding and without compassion for myself. These realities contaminated my ability to be present in relationships and to comprehend what my body was saying to me in situations which required a full appreciation of what others are asking of me. The term "at ease" was a command the military used frequently in training and group actions. Well, I now find that I am "at ease" in my own skin and can be kinder and more considerate for those who have led similar lives and who might not quite grasp with any clarity what has happened to them ... and by that I mean whether or not their distress had any active service roots.

A powerful work which goes beyond other books and studies on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

While there is no shortage of books and other material on post-traumatic stress disorder, The Evil Hours breaks new ground. As a former marine, author David J. Morris not only has personal experience with post-traumatic stress disorder but also spent an extensive amount of time reviewing previous work in the field as well as interviewing people who currently struggle with PTSD. He also looked at popular culture and the representations of PTSD in movies, literature, etc. In addition to all of this, he added his own perspective. The result is a vivid and gripping work, one which deserves a wide readership.

The individuals Morris met included not only war veterans but rape survivors and those who'd gone through near death experiences. Their personal accounts and statements are extremely moving, revealing the challenges they face daily. Morris discovered that those with PTSD may also be more likely to become violent, suffer from extreme anxiety, a sense of alienation, and loneliness. Without treatment, the effects can be lasting. Those with post-traumatic stress disorder not only face great personal challenges but also may be unable to function well at work, in their marriages - and as members of their communities.

One of Morris's goals in writing The Evil Hours was to understand how the "current war on post-traumatic stress is being waged". He also looked at past information about PTSD. Then he assimilated it all and arrived at his own conclusions. Some of those conclusions were ones I hadn't read before - and I've read quite a bit about PTSD.

Morris acknowledges that he was also partly motivated to write the book for personal reasons, to grasp why his world seemed so different after his return from Iraq and to grapple with his feelings of alienation. But he brings in larger issues as well, including recent treatments and therapies, resulting in a balanced combination of both personal and wider information.

I was surprised and also encouraged by learning of positive change which can (eventually) occur after suffering post-traumatic stress disorder. One individual felt that PTSD "recalibrated" his values and gave him an opportunity to reassess his life and move in a better direction. And Morris found other examples of those who felt that extreme stress had led to both great suffering and - in time- opportunities for personal growth and a new beginning. Unfortunately, he also discovered that society often considered post-traumatic stress disorder sufferers to be "broken", possibly leading to a self-fulfilling prophecy from survivors who accepted others' perceptions as the truth.

Of course a single review can't possibly list all of the topics covered in The Evil Hours but I hope I've included enough here to compel potential readers to obtain a copy of the book. In addition to the introduction, main chapters, and epilogue, there are detailed notes on studies, books, articles, and other material related to each chapter. There is also a bibliography for those who want to seek out more information on PTSD.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject of ...

Absolutely essential for anyone seeking to understand what has become a contemporary shibboleth.

I'd read The Emperor of All Maladies a few years prior, which was billed as a "biography of cancer." Similar things can be (and I'm sure have been) said about this book. Morris uses his personal story as a framework from which to investigate PTSD. He focuses primarily (almost exclusively, though not quite) on military PTSD, and in particularly the American experience with it, though he does acknowledge the reasons (its overwhelming prevalence among veteran populations in America, the fact that it's been studied extensively by the Veterans Administration, and its accessible narrative qualities) and also includes a story of a woman suffering PTSD in the aftermath of sexual assault.

The medical lineage is interesting but not nearly as engaging as the literary heritage of PTSD, especially in the Western canon. His bibliography and notes are a treasure trove of further reading, though sticking just to Evil Hours provides a reader with a thorough and comprehensive understanding.

I think Morris could have spent some more time exploring, if only briefly, some of the populations he mentions as surviving PTSD (natural disasters, sexual assault, refugees), but this is a small suggestion. His writing is engaging and open, neither overly academic nor simplistic. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject of PTSD, literature, or the human condition.

Really nicely written, very vivacious, very practical. Le livre se lit si facilement et on se sent vraiment t�moin et en m�me temps volontaire dans l'hypnose de rue.... J'attends avec impatience Tome 2 ! Un v�ritable manuel pratique.
