Getting up to Get Down

From the second you open this book, to the day you put it down for the last time, you are exposed to the origins of graffiti and the graffiti lifestyle. From the in depth interviews with the infamous "Fabulous Five", to the bias opinions of New York's M.T.A(Metropolitan Transit Authority), this book brings you back to the late 70's, where style's were made and the fame was gained.

As a graffiti artist myself, I related to a lot of the stories told by the artists documented in this book. Craig Castleman portrayed the perfect image of what it's like to be an "artist" and a "criminal" at the same time. The adrenaline of a late night excursion, to the overload of a police chase. At the end of it all, the overall satisfaction of seeing your name roll by on the local transit line.

I really enjoyed looking back at the photos captured in the book. There is a lot of history documented in this piece. The first "whole train", the evolution of the "bomb", to miscelaneous "tagging" are all shown in detail colour pictures.

I feel this book captured the essence of the graffiti culture, and documented the views and opinions of both sides, the artist, and the audience.

"Getting Up" Craig Castleman, definetly a good read, for any audience. Educational and fun at the same time.

Getting up is a Quality book!

Getting up is the best book I have ever read. It's not filed with pictures but explains what life is like to be a writer in New York.It tells the story of Lee and his famous whole train!It tells you how the writers racked the spraycans!If you want to get in to Graffiti buy this book!!I enjoyed it from cover to cover. One point left to make=I only wish i was as good as the artists in Getting up! END

Real stories about "REAL" grafitti artists. It could not have been done better! The author, Graig Castleman writes about one of the most respected artists of them all, Lee. Lee's Graffiti years were awsome. The book is great to help the public truly understand the term "Street Art" Any book that can make my own parents believe in my own Graffiti gets 5 stars!

Ronnie Smith grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. He attended Loyola University of Maryland (B.A.) and the University of Maryland. He has traveled the world as a professional aviator, bringing a spiritual dimension to his writing through this inspiration. His poetry has appeared in The New York Times, The Wisconsin Review, and The Evansville Review, among others. He resides in St. Louis, Missouri.

A lovely strong collection of poems for children.

This small book contains small poems for small people. Each poem is carefully and delicately made, something we often think of when we see something exquisite in nature and compare it to a human - made bauble. These short observations of children and their lives, their sometimes nearly invisible place in the world as they gaze about them to discover what the world is like and how to live in it, are braided through with verbal pictures of children in all seasons and activities. For me they brought strong memories of my own childhood, and moments where it seemed I learned all I needed of life just by being there. A lovely small collection of poems for children.

Delightful collection of poetry for chidren

Poetry is a wonderful thing and I believe there is no better time to be introduced to it then at childhood. The Sky Is Wonder is a very nice collection that is short enough so kids won’t become overwhelmed or bored, and has a strong pull for them to go back and read again. I wish I’d had access to books like this myself when I was younger, but at least I can spread this one around for young ones to get bitten by the poetry bug.

Wow! This book is amazing and it truly is a joy to read. The book has incredibly clear instructions and does not assume the reader has previous knowledge of spoons or woodworking. I found the instructions very helpful and clear. In fact, I am currently making my first spoon and watching it emerge from the wood is exciting and inspiring.

I only wish I could sit down with the author but this book is the next best thing!

Norton individually crafts voices and personalities for each character in such a way that a listener might imagine an entire cast of voice talent working overtime. This is a comic/surreal tale of a one-legged gentleman farmer who participates in a poorly planned botched robbery-turned-murder, only to find himself having a long conversation with the dead man shortly after the deed. In addition he hears from his own soul, who he names Joe. Joe's voice is that of a wry observer with a voice of calm, removed authority, whereas dead man Mathers' voice is completely nasal, at once sickly and droll. Mathers sends the farmer to a two-dimensional barracks of three metaphysical policemen. Here he finds himself in a world where people can become bicycles and eternity is within walking distance. Norton's rendition of the main policeman, Sergeant Pluck, tips the reading into a full-out performance. The enormous blustery fellow with red cheeks and brushy mustache and eyebrows is portrayed like a jolly yet dangerous Disney walrus. Norton's Irish brogue, accentuated to different degrees with the various characters, ties the ribbon on a perfect presentation of this absurd and chilling masterpiece. (Apr.)

O'Brien is just WEIRD!!! and that's a good thing.

Flann O'Brien isn't for everyone. There are quite a few one star ratings (and I'm sure those people would have rather given it a zero if they could), but I think that's a good thing. Here's why. O'Brien is just weird, bizarre, and perhaps the most "out there" writer I have ever read. Your classic drug trip books like "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and "On the Road" have nothing on this guy. If you aren't paying attention to every little detail in the writing then you just aren't going to get it. With that being said, some people are just too dense to get his prose. This is a novelist I want people to hate, because honestly he's my guy...I don't want you to get it.

"The Third Policeman" didn't immerse the reader into O'Brien's unique and bizarre writing style immediately. In fact that was one of the the things about this novel that I found interesting. I thought I was reading gothic literature like Hawthorne, or Brockden Brown at first. It wasn't until the first twenty pages that O'Brien introduces you to the bizarre world in which you will inhabit for the remainder of the novel. There are certain aspects of this novel that I didn't enjoy as much as his first novel, "At Swim Two Birds," but I thought this novel didn't have as many nonsensical moments that dragged on for too long. All in all, this is a great read. This was his second novel, which became his last since it wasn't published until after his death, and it is only the second novel of his I have read. I can't wait to read the rest of them!

It combines elements of fantasy, magic realism, horror, humor, satire, and it could only have been written by an Irishman. Finished in 1940 but not published until 1967, a year after the author's death, the main text concerns the adventures of a man who commits a robbery and murder in rural Ireland, but following this, bizarre and impossible things occur when he is captured by two peculiar policemen and imprisoned in a peculiar police station. A series of long footnotes parallel the text, detailing the protagonist's obsession with the absurd physicist De Selby and his crackpot ideas. (This device is copied by Robert Anton Wilson in his Historical Illuminatus Chronicles, and possibly by Nabokov in Pale Fire, though it seems unlikely Nabokov had read the manuscript of the then-unpublished Third Policeman.) Another device, of separating the protagonist into two separate characters who then converse with each other, may have been copied by Phillip K. Dick in his equally strange novel Valis.
The only other writer I know who measures up to this standard of originality, humor and strangeness, is the late, great, R. A. Lafferty. Read this book. Then read it again.

Interesting Narrator, Strong Absurdity

I personally love stories that have a very distant tone in them - they always make me wonder what the narrator is hiding, why they are so detached from themselves, and rather like a person drawing backwards, it makes me very curious indeed.

The Third Policeman is a book exactly like that. From the start I was really drawn in by this sense of a very odd narrator who tells a story that, for the first few chapters at least, left me feeling unsettled and a bit scared. After that it moves into the realm of pure absurdity. The good thing about this was that I stopped feeling so unsettled as I had at the start. The bad thing about it was that I did put it down a number of times and forget to pick it back up. But every time I would pick it up again, I did enjoy it, I just kept losing the thread that was tying it all together.

I read somewhere that this book found difficulties in being published - that, I think, is a bit shame. It is a good book in terms of its originality and voice, and I'm glad it finally found a publisher. The author is adept at his craft - I love his use of words and conversations - and if you're the kind of reader who enjoys strong absurdity, I think this would really entertain you.

A decent introduction to some of the key concepts of epistemology.

The book is an easy to read introduction to Epistemology. Erlandson does deliver his intended objective, although I wouldn't call it completely jargon-free. After all, how can you avoid certain terms. I like the way he presented the different views of philosophers to the different aspect to the topic without saying which would be his preferred way; thus he leaves it up to the reader. The book covers a number of different areas of epistemology, such as, how we know, what is knowledge, justification, the external world, truth, other minds, and the mind/body problem.

If this would be your first book on the subject, it should reward you. If you have read about it previously, there still might be some valuable nuggets to obtain. If you have study this area of philosophy in depth, it is probably not for you.

There's just no other way to say it; this clear writer thinks and writes clearly! The explanations are like mountain streams.

Learn to capture the "moveable ways" of a liar, a crooked politician, or a just plain... huckster. My own syntax is "unsure",

but some write and speak in a manner that is deliberate...calculated to mislead and misdirect your thinking and behavior.

I have read and heard this redesigned speech, and now I can cut through the misleading rhetorical tricks.

He backs his assertions through an unprecedented quantitative analysis of a new data set of policy proposals covering almost fifty years of the postwar era from Truman to Clinton.

Rudalevige finds that presidents are not bound by a relentless compulsion to centralize but follow a more subtle strategy of staff allocation that makes efficient use of limited bargaining resources. New items and, for example, those spanning agency jurisdictions, are most likely to be centralized; complex items follow a mixed process. The availability of expertise outside the White House diminishes centralization. However, while centralization is a management strategy appropriate for engaging the wider executive branch, it can imperil an item's fate in Congress. Thus, as this well-written book makes plain, presidential leadership hinges on hard choices as presidents seek to simultaneously manage the executive branch and attain legislative success.

Clear blend of archives and statistics

This book just won the Neustadt Award from the American Political Science Association as the best book on the presidency (I guess for 2002). Having read it in a graduate school seminar last spring, I concur with the choice. It's the best recent book I've read on how presidents deploy their staff to produce legislative policy proposals. Rudalevige suggests a theory for when presidents will use centralized White House staff and when they will rely on the bureaucracy that is grounded in the "transaction cost" field of economics. His argument is convincing, if sometimes abstruse (especially I would guess for non-academics; this book is *not* a Bob Caro kind of book about politics).
The blend of methodologies is what I appreciated most, perhaps. There's a great battle in political science between those who use statistics (quantitative methodology) and those who focus on historical or archival data (qualitative methodology). Presidency books have tended to fall in the latter camp -- one neat thing about this book is that it does both. It uses careful archival research, from presidential libraries and the OMB archives, and uses that to code a large dataset for statistical analysis. There are two quantitative chapters that non-political scientists might want to avoid, though they are summed up in the concluding chapter.
All in all, an important work for presidency scholars; a very informative read for those with an interest in the presidency (and willing to tolerate discussion of political science methods!)
