Frolov and Novikov's Black Hole Physics

I referenced these authors and also Klapdor-Kleingrothaus and Zuber (see my review of their book) in my paper on Quantum Gravity delivered before Professor Kursunoglu's Orbis Scientiae Quantum Gravity conference in December, 1999 (see my review of Kursunoglu). The Editor has summarized the book in his usual excellent way, and here I should just add that there is much material in this book not covered in others, including relationships with 2+1 dimensional quantum gravity (see my review of Carlip, black holes inside monopoles, dilatons, quantum hair, etc. Everyone should buy this book and, if necessary, hire a consultant or tutor to translate it into more simple English.

Airport Moments

When I arrived today at the airport for a flight to Chicago, I was secretly happy that the weather was so awful. I have to admit that I have never in my life ever thought this....and I have flown over 700k miles on United alone. But happy I was. Because it was going to give me more time with Attachments. I started reading. The first delay was announced. I smiled and kept reading. The second delay was announced I was relieved. I needed to know more about Lincoln. I needed to read more of Beth's fabulous one-liners. (How does one know when one's cervix is ripe? Do you thump it?...HA!). They announced boarding....and I thought.... Maybe we will be further delayed....hopefully..... They announced another delay....this time indefinite! I quietly rejoiced. I was the only one of hundreds of Chicago bound passengers smiling as I sank deeper and deeper into Lincoln, Beth and Jennifer....hoping to just continue living in their world.....6 hours of delays later.....it was the best flight experience I have had....ever. Because Attachments is everything I want in a book....wonderful characters who I fall in love with and cheer for and care for. Raibow, Thanks for a wonderful flight. If you couldn't tell - I loved it.

Chick Lit @ Its Best

I don't do book reviews but I fell in love with Attachments and didn't want it to end. Chick lit can be a shabby genre, with some slapped together stories and badly written characters. This book is what the genre could be, if publishers looked for authors who wrote from the heart and had an authentic voice. The characters are funny and interesting, but most importantly there's a sweetness in them and in the story itself that I haven't found in a long time. The best thing I can compare it to is Bridget Jones, which is the highest chick lit compliment. Just like Bridget captures a certain Brit tone, Attachments nails a Midwestern attitude that's as familiar as it is surprising. All I can say is read this book.

Bright, affectionate, gracious and hopeful

Full disclosure: Rainbow is my friend. But I'll tell you what: If her book was lame, I would just not write a review? Because telling someone to read something that blows is mean to EVERYBODY. You would be all up in her grill. And write mean reviews right here.

But Attachments really IS is gentle, joshing, sweet and hopeful. Rowell puts her funny in the mouths of her well-drawn characters, likable types that you'd be pleased to meet and that you're happy to eavesdrop on. Her late-90s newsroom is familiar to me, because I knew lots of people in the newsroom that inspired her. She captures it delightfully, with attention to workplace detail and local feeling. She cradles her story in the crook of her elbow, and makes it seem easy to craft a narrative that is long on kind insights into good people.

No villain emerges. (Not even some real doofuses whom she pricks but declines to skewer.) Her cast of characters is making the best that they can of all of the day, not just its remains. You'll find yourself happy at their advances and sure their reverses will not last.

If there's a criticism, that's the one. Tension is limited and the sense that truth will out and love will conquer is never far from the surface of the page. It's a bit like Shakespearean comedy, where you know from the first moment that the strapping cast swaggers and sashays on that everything will be OK, at least eventually. There's no moment when we think the root will snap and a hero will plummet to a sad end. The safety harness is visible in every chapter.

I'll not be dissuaded from congratulating our author, all the same. She has found a charming voice with which to enter publishing. Her characters all fairly blink with delight to enter the sunshine and we're lucky to be near them, if only for a moment. I found dozens of smart quips, deft sentences, and natural progress for the story's subjects. I wanted good to triumph and love to conquer. I have no higher praise.

About the Author
Norman Ohler is an award-winning German novelist, screenwriter, and journalist. He spent five years researching�Blitzed�in numerous archives in Germany and the United States, and spoke to eye-witnesses, military historians, and doctors. He is also the author of the novels�Die Quotenmaschine�(the world’s first hypertext novel),�Mitte�and�Stadt des Goldes�(translated into English as�Ponte City). He was co-writer of the script for Wim Wenders’ film Palermo Shooting.

Read it like a novel

Ohler is a journalist rather than a historian, and this turns out to be the source of both the positive and the negative aspects of the book. He writes in a breezy and highly readable style, keeping us glued to his text even when he's dealing with technical matters. His prose is vivid and often waxes poetic, though it must be said that his descriptions sometimes seem more a product of imagination than research: "Those bright blue eyes, once so hypnotic, were now dull. Crumbs stuck to his lips."

About half the book deals with the use of stimulants in the German military. He feels that the surprising success of the 1940 Ardennes offensive was due in large part to methamphetamine distributed to the troops, and many historians would agree. At times he may be going a bit too far though, such as in finding a pharmacological reason for the famous stop-order at Dunkirk, attributing it to G�ring's opiate addiction. And it might have been appropriate to put military drug use in context: this was not a German monopoly but was common in British and other armies at the time, and still is today (more cautiously, let us hope).

The other half of the book is about "Patient A," aka Adolf Hitler. In recent years, historians have debunked the old idea that his doctor was keeping Hitler doped up on a variety of noxious substances, especially narcotics. See the excellent book Was Hitler Ill, by Eberle and Neumann.Was Hitler ILL?: A Final Diagnosis But Ohler goes back to the old view, imagining Dr. Morell giving him almost daily injections of Eukodal (an opioid similar to todays Oxycontin). The evidence for this is dubious at best, based on often illegible records, which often refer to injections of "x" which Ohler thinks was Eukodal. And Ohler claims that Hitler's decline in 1945 was due to the Eukodal supply running out on January 2 of that year, resulting in withdrawal symptoms. This seems scarcely credible. Yes, the German pharmaceutical industry was in bad shape, but when G�ring was captured he had a supply of 24,000 doses of opioids, and it's hard to believe that the Fuhrer himself would have been reduced to cold turkey withdrawal.

Summary: a well-written book, but don't believe everything you read.

The previously untold story of the extent to which Nazi Germany was fueled by drugs

Modern inorganic chemistry had its birth in Germany in the early 20th Century. Much of this was motivated by the needs of the First World War. Blocked by the Allies, and unable to import needed supplies for the pharmaceutical and armaments industries, German chemists set to work synthesizing the missing compounds.

Cut off from Chilean deposits of sodium nitrate needed to make explosives, German scientists worked on a way of fixing atmospheric nitrogen, available from the atmosphere, into a compound that could be used as an industrial feedstuff. In 1910, Fritz Haber developed the process named after him for producing ammonia (NH3), and Germany was again able to make explosives.

German scientists also pioneered the making of synthetic fuels from coal during WWI, although this was not as important a factor in the war as it was to be a few decades later, in WWII, when Germany needed millions of gallons of fuel to power the mechanized Wermacht and the Luftwaffe.

In the world of medicine, German scientists developed diamorphine, later trademarked as Heroin. Several times as potent as morphine, Heroin was widely used to treat wounded soldiers, and became a popular over the counter drug as well. After the war, it became a popular drug in the civilian market as well, with people using it not just for pain relief, but for relief from the poverty and depression of the Weimar era. It was estimated that 40% of all medical doctors were addicted to it.

This changed with the rise of the Nazis, who instituted a severe program of control of drug addiction and addicts- at least those addicts who lacked access to power. Being addicted was associated with the Jews, who the Nazis attempted to portray as being responsible for drug use. Wiping out either was wiping out both. Addicts were first treated, then imprisoned, and eventually executed during the war.

But not all drug use was looked down upon. Popular writers have discussed the use of stimulants like benzedrine by German soldiers, and much has been written and speculated about drug use by Hitler and his close associates. Goering was said to be strongly addicted to opiates, and Hitler was constantly attended to by a quack physician who was constantly injecting him with vitamins and stimulants, swabbing his gums with cocaine and administering other drugs.

Most notorious of all, though, was the use of Zyklon B, a compound that, on exposure to water, releases deadly hydrogen cyanide (HCN) gas. Originally developed as an insecticide for use in delousing clothes and similar applications, it gained its notoriety at Auschwitz, where it was used to kill over a million prisoners- mostly Jews.

But one drug stood out over all the others in its use in Nazi Germany, and it’s a drug that most people, and probably most historians, are unaware of. It was called Pervitin, and it was used by soldiers, office workers, industrial workers, housewives- in fact by pretty much the entire German population. It was sold as a remedy for depression, for tiredness, for those needing a bit of pep, students needing to concentrate on their studies, and every other imaginable use. You could even buy chocolates with the active compound in them.

That active ingredient was yet another product of the inventiveness of the earth 20thC German chemical industry, first discovered in 1893, termed N-methylamphetamine, better known today as methamphetamine, or simply meth. The same product being cooked up in trailers and warehouses by criminals today was once the most popular over the counter drug in Nazi-era Germany.

German phamecutical inventiveness of that era wasn’t just limited to Heroin and Pertivin. There was also Eukodal, a powerful synthetic narcotic that Dr. Morrell regularly injected into the declining Hitler, along with an ever increasing range of stimulants, tranquilizers, and painkillers. It’s still around today, under the name Oxycodon- one of the most dangerous and abused of the modern synthetic narcotics.

It was the stimulants like Pertivin, though, that probably played the largest role in the Nazi war machine. The Wehrmacht used them to allow soldiers to fight for extend periods and to get injured soldiers back on the line. Ordinary soldiers obtained their own supplies from family back home- letters from writer Henrich B�ll, quoted here, describe a near-constant series of requests letters to home, pleading for more Pertivan to help him deal with the stress and physical demands of the war.

Author Ohler has delved deep into wartime archives and other records to discover a wealth of new information on just how deeply the third reich was dependent on the pharmaceutical industry. His narrative is built around two threads: The increasing demand for, and use of, drugs by the military, and the decline of an increasingly addicted and drugged Hitler at the hands of his personal physician Morrell. The result is a narrative at once fascinating, compelling, and shocking. This is a story that has not previously been told in such depth, and that makes it a must-read for students of WWII.

Badly Broken

A quote summarizes the delusional hypocrisy of Hitler and the majority of the Third Reich: “ The higher a man rises the more he has to be able to abstain…” While it is possible that this proclamation was recorded before he sunk into the degenerate state that the end of the war found him in, Hitler’s tendency toward megalomania and a false reality was magnified and later fueled by an ongoing cocktail of narcotics. Ohler reports that much of the Wehrmacht was equally driven by the false bravado of methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin and other products of the German pharmaceutical industry, a fact that should detract from the accounts of bravery and war fighting prowess that occasionally make their way into the record.

Ohler traces much of the narrative of Hitler’s physical and psychological descent through the interactions with his personal doctor, Dr. Morell. The doctor is not just a ‘true believer’ in the National Socialist ideology, Morell is more of an opportunist rat seeking out financial enrichment through whatever corrupt avenue presents itself. As portrayed, it is easy to see why he would be so willing to concoct ever more potent mixtures to prop up Patient A, even though he must have been aware of the failing nature of the war.

Ohler contributes an enlightening insight to the extensive corpus on Hitler and World War II. The use of narcotics by Japanese Kamikaze and amphetamine support for the British air war is well documented, but this drug abuse has remained unknown to me up to this point. This revelation brings up a question for lengthy philosophical discussion: can the German soldiers be ethically responsible for prosecuting the horrors of their war on humanity given their chemically altered state? Discuss.

Far from perfect, but still very good.

This is a review of Christopher Rowe's new (2012) translation of Plato's masterpiece, the Republic (ISBN 0141442433). It is not a review of Plato's Republic as such, but solely of the merits and demerits of Rowe's translation.

I've never quite trusted Rowe as an exegete of Plato, as he's got too much of his own personal agenda intrude on his analysis. His joint book with Terry Penner on the Lysis, for instance, falls far short of giving us an unbiased, expansive, authorative commentary on the dialogue, especially when compared to more sober competitors like Michael Bordt's in the Göttingen Plato.

But as a translator, Rowe has proven time and again that he's singularly scrupulous, and attentive to technical detail where it matters. His renderings of Plato's Politicus (Statesman) and Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, the latter published with Sarah Broadie, are probably the most authoritative around.

The same can be said for this newest of his translational efforts. In general, translations of the Republic usually err on the side of either trying too heavily to recreate the literary qualities of the original, or miss out so much of that detail because they try to be super exact on technicalities, that in either case the English falls far short of giving us a good understanding of Plato's Greek. The solution, so far, is to read Plato's Republic with (at least) two translations side by side. For instance, on the literal I've found Desmond Lee's quite good, and on the literary, Tom Griffith's stands out. Among the older ones, Paul Shorey's is particularly good on the literary side. Others, like Cornford, Waterfield, or Grube (even when revised under Reeve) can be safely avoided, for having the translators' hobby horses intrude on and mar the main text.

It's a bit hard to place Rowe on this spectrum from the literary to the literal, because he's consistently improved the situation on both sides of the spectrum - and I can think of no higher praise.

For one, Rowe has certainly outdone the rest of field by giving a more lively rendition of the flow of the dialogue, by paying more attention to the flow of the individual characters' speech. Although his translation follows the new Oxford Classical Text by Slings (2003), the punctuation is often Rowe's own and, I feel, often the superior choice. The dialogue becomes a lot more lively, and we get greater accuracy.

At the same time, Rowe's translation comes with seven hundred footnotes, and these are meticulously researched and show him on top of the current scholarly game. His translation is probably the first to unequivocally get the tricky lines in 596a correct. Mistranslations of these lines have encouraged generations of interpretors to saddle Plato with the view that one can posit a (Platonic) Form for each general term, no matter how gerrymandered. That rendering is simply false, and Rowe's note explains why. (He credits David Sedley with the point, and while Sedley's arguments are a welcome addition to the literature on this point, I wish Rowe had also mentioned Burnyeat's, on p. 298 with 298n.4 in Gail Fine's anthology 'Plato 2'.)

This increased accuracy also pervades a lot else in the translation, and I for one am grateful for it. Particularly the connecting particles, so important to the Greek flow of arguments, are given their due.

At times, however, Rowe falls short. A Platonic dialogue proceeds, usually, with (alternating) dominant speakers eliciting agreement or disagreement on particular points from their interlocutors. A great deal of text, therefore, is taken up by Plato expressing how the interlocutors express themselves on that point. Not just a 'yes' or 'no' - or the occasional, 'I don't understand, please repeat the question/point' - is in order. STRENGTH of (dis)agreement is just as important, for the respective next steps in an argument to go through. Plato's interlocutors signal their at times cautious dis/agreement on a point, with the occasional 'Perhaps...?' or the vehement 'In now way!'. The questions put to them, however, at times signal how strong the main speaker expects his dialogue partner to agree with him - with how many points just made, and how strongly. Thus at 479e5-6 we have the exchange 'ê ouch houtôs; - houtô.' Which means, 'Or is it not in (exactly) this way? - [No,] it is in exactly this way.' Which comes after five lines of contentious arguing. In Rowe, we get 'Right? - Right.' which is at once too casual and uncommittal.

Other passages show similar lapses in attention to detail. Plato's discussion of artefacts in book X has plagued commentators forever, because it's unclear why or how Plato can correlate human artefacts to (allegedly) timeless Forms. While Rowe's notes are characteristically informative of what's going on in these passages, and warn readers of the potential inconsistenties on artefact Forms, his translation looks rather unsure, tendentious even.

Plato's discussion of artefacts, especially of furnitures, centres on the term skeuê, which has a broad and a narrow meaning. On the narrow one, σκευή means furnishing, specifically `equipment, attire, apparel' (LSJ s.v.). In Republic, book X, translators like Lee (1974) and Griffith (2000) render σκευή, not as furnishing, but as furniture, given that Plato illustrates the term by the examples of a table and a couch.

On the broader meaning, conveyed by the cognate adjective σκευαστός, the term conveys the entire class of things `prepared by art, artificial' (LSV s.v.), and is opposed to natural things, things produced by and in nature (φυτευτός), in Republic 510a and 515c.

Plato's discussion moves from the narrow usage (in 596b1, b5) to the broader one (596c6). Traditionally, translators convey this by translating the first use as 'furniture' (e.g. Lee and Griffith) and then go to 'artifice'.

Rowe, however, is less clear. He begins with the fully generic translation of skeuê as `product(s)' for 596b, picking up the term from his equally tendentious translation of μῑ́μησις in 595c8 as ` imitation' (brackets mine to indicate his additions), and at 596c Rowe changes gear to render skeuê as `manufactured items'. No attendant note is given, and readers are left to wonder, as they have for generations, what explains this sudden change of pace.

I'm not sure Rowe's approach is superior or inferior to Lee's and Griffith's, but it indicates to me abundantly that one can't rely on his translation without comparing it to others. I doubt he would disagree. At the same time, his earlier efforts on Statesman and Nicomachean Ethics have, in my opinion, done just that - become so authoritative that one can reliably work on their basis alone.

For those reasons, I'd heavily recommend customers interested in Plato's masterpiece to purchase Rowe's translation. It's clearly superior to many competitors out there. At the same time, Rowe will supplement, but not supplant, earlier efforts, particulary those of Lee and Griffith.

As far as the publisher is concerned, Penguin can be congratulated for sponsoring a new translation so soon after revising Lee's twice in the past ten years, under the careful leadership of Melissa Lane and Rachana Kamtekar.

At the same time, something is lost in the transition. I can't speak for Lane's, but Kamtekar's version of Lee offered helpful diagrams and illustrations in notes and appendices. Undergraduates, not to mention lay readers, find a lot of Plato's text hardgoing without the occasional image to explain how things 'hang together'. Plato's simile of the Line in book V, for one, is incredibly densely presented, as is the 'Spindle of Necessity' in Book VIII. Kamtekar's edition had helpful illustrations on such points, and retained Lee's wonderful introductions to sub-sections of the main text, which set the scene and pre-empted some of the more current misunderstandings that twentieth and twenty first century readers are prone to. This is now replaced by Rowe's own (3-page) synopsis of the dialogue, which is frankly a poor man's substitute for Lee.

For reasons beyond me, Penguin decided to kill this material. Rowe's notes and appendices are entirely devoid of imagery.

And, while we are at it, Rowe's reading list is, if anything, twice as short as Kamtekar's, and no longer comes into neatly categorized themes of the Republic. Writings on aesthetics had to suffer in particular. While I'm glad to see Verity Harte's and Myles Burnyeat's efforts recognized in this area, Alexander Nehamas' older - and equally good if not superior - offerings have been chopped off. The same is true for a great many other essays and books that, I feel, deserves mention to a first time audience coming to Plato. Rowe sees fit to mention Julia Annas' work on Plato. As I said in my review of her 'Introduction', this reputation is frankly undeserved and compares very poorly against recent alternatives, most of them omitted by Rowe.

In the end, then, the book is a mixed result of the very variety I've come to expect from Rowe. Top notch translation, but a tad tendentious when it comes to the work of other scholars. Still, I'm very happy with the purchase, and would recommend it warmly to others.
