Very comprehensive book about CFS and Fibromyalgia

I have read through this book once, and liked it. He recommends the SHIN (now I think he's updated it to the SHINE) protocol. Sleep, Hormone Support, Immune System and Nutrition. I had been reading (I apparently have chronic fatigue) about this, and already doing most of what he suggested. I do feel a lot better, but I'm still fatigued, and expect this to continue for some time. I have added d-Ribose (I'm using the Jarrow Formula) and I believe it's helping a bit. I pretty certain it's easing my stiffness and pain. However, I still need naps, especially when stressful situations arise.

I think I have the older book. For the benefit of the reader, I'd like to add something, not in this book (maybe not invented at the time this book was written), but one that seems to be helping me and thousands of others with CFS: "polyphenols", sometimes called "Reds". I just watched the Dr. Stephen Gundry "infomercial" (he's a cardiologist), and he makes a point about 1) energy and fatigue, and 2) vascular problems. He created a product called "Vital Reds" said to give energy. I read through about 200 reviews on his site, (about 3000 reviews, they seem all good, and placed an order. There are many "Reds" products available, but after 5 days, my energy is WAY up with this product. From what I am researching the other products don't have as much "good stuff" as this one does (I am not associated with Gundry MD, or the product, just trying to help people with CFS, like me have energy). VR is so helpful to me that it's the very first thing I want to do in the morning when I get up. You can find a similar product cheaper, but for me I wanted the best I could find (at least right now). I didn't buy it on Amazon, but I have done a review on Amazon because fatigue is the #1 complaint of patients. (Heart disease is the #1 killer in America, so I think it's relevant). I didn't see one review where it didn't help.

Dr. Teitelbaum is brutally honest about practices in the medical community, where they just "don't get it". Honesty like this costs you, and I'm sure he's been snubbed by some in his field. However, for those of us with CFS, who are being told 'it's in our minds, it's depression' (I've had depression, there is a difference), it's a lifeline.

Because they don't get it, I am not a big adherent of conventional medicine. MDs really don't get the "nutritional" connection between disease and health. To this end, I would recommend "Never Fear Cancer Again", by Raymond Francis, and "The Gerson Therapy" by Charlotte Gerson. My brother had (surgical removal) cancer, and the surgeon (a former senior fellow/ Chief of Surgery at a University Hospital) pooh-poohed it (he is an outstanding surgeon, we all really like him). Physicians just don't get it about nutrition because they haven't been taught. You have to be your own advocate.

And that is outlined here in this book--in fact, this doctor (who had a practice at the VERY hospital my brother is in right now) discusses this, and the insurance snaggles and how to deal with them. For this kind of fearless honesty from a medical community member, I give 5 stars. He references another of my favorite physician authors, Dr. Carolyn Dean, who exposes the heresy herself, and has gotten in trouble over it. It was Dr. Dean who wrote an online article who made me understand it wasn't a character failing that I was so tired, and how to begin addressing it.

Dr. T offers a wealth of information on prescription and non prescription medications (kind of overwhelming). It's clear he knows this inside and out, and in fact, he himself experienced chronic fatigue (which is helpful to know). He recommends HGH (human growth hormone), and this is expensive! (but it helps). I am using a homeopathic HGH -- It might not have been available when he wrote the book. I found a homeopathic (under the tongue spray) that is $85 and is said to work as well as the $2,000 injections (HGH Plus, by ProBlen). ((I'm not associated with ProBlen)). I think it's making my thyroid make the hormones it needs to be making. (Understand I'm also ingesting a LOT of minerals, and vitamins also).

If you want a comprehensive look at CFS and Fibromyalgia, and how to start addressing them, I recommend this book. I'm going back to reabsorb some of what he says.

THE book to help you treat your chronic fatigue and pain from a reasearch-based biochemical approach.

After contracting a "mystery illness" that left me in various hospitals for months at a time, unable to work in my office setting for a year, and feeling like I must be crazy after a year without a diagnosis, I bought and read this book. It was amazing to find out how many people were suffering from similar symptoms and lab results, and to find out that many of them also didn't have a diagnosis. To have a medical doctor say that it happened to him, too, and that it is okay, was immensely comforting. Being an extremely logical person, I was even more thrilled that the author approached his recommendations for regaining my physical and mental function from a very biochemical, study-based perspective, as opposed to the anecdotal evidence cited by similar books. The best news - his recommendations (in combination with addressing the mental/emotional aspects of chronic illness) work. I am not who I was physically before my illness, but I am someone who is able to work again, care for her family, and live at a level of functionality that I can accept and embrace. Also, I like that he sets forth clear recommendations, but is very open to the fact that different conditions and different people will need different interventions and different medication/supplement regimens. Too many times I think authors develop cookie-cutter "plans for health" that treat everyone the same. This author did not do that and acknowledges that this really is a process of trial and error...working with a health care professional to find what will help you. But he's saying what the majority of the healthcare professionals I've seen would not say - doctors can't fully explain every chronic illness, but there is evidence that the illnesses exist...so it is NOT in your head. If you have been told you suffer from chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, or one of the other host of diagnoses or non-diagnoses that involve debilitating fatigue and pain, this book should be in your home.

Honest Review

Fiend is the followup to Addict where we were first introduced to John and Alix. I'd encourage you to read Addict first. Fiend picks up right where the first book ends.

Alix has just gotten over the shock of discovering that the mysterious dom she has been spending all of her time blindfolded with at Scene, the BDSM club, was the same man she had been lusting over at her job for months. Can they move their dom/sub relationship to a new level now that she knows the truth?

Well, I can tell you that this book is filled with plenty of very hot sexy BDSM scenes that will be sure to steam your panties off. The relationship between Alix and John really grows naturally. I love John's dominant, yet vulnerable, personality and the way he surrenders everything and give's into his urges with Alix. And Alix's uncertainty and low self-esteem, is just crying out for John to care for her and to make sure she knows how beautiful she really is.

But, as usual, things do not always go smoothly. There is a fly in the ointment in the form of Mariah, one of John's ex subs. She is determined to break them up so she can lure John back into her own life. My one complaint is that it was too easy for her to sow doubt into Alix's mind. The entire thing could have been quickly avoided of the two if them had just sat down and talked about what was going on. But lack of communication seems to be a common occurrence in erotic romance novels these days.

The book ends on a high note, but the Mariah problem is not yet fully resolved, and Alix and John are still keeping secrets from each other. I'm sure we will all know more in the next installment due to come out later this year. I am definitely looking forward to it.

Great second installment!

I was given this book for an honest review.

Holy Crap! This was an awesome second story! I loved the first, but this just added to the story so well. I must admit that I usually am somewhat disappointed in second and third books, because it sometimes feels like the author just continues writing for the sake of continuing, but Orman truly added to the depth of the characters, plot line and created an entirely new book, while keeping it in conjunction with the first.

John's character is so much more than what he appears on the surface. I know that he loves Alix, but sometimes, I just want to hit him over the head and say "what were you thinking??!". The pain of his past that we see moved me, and I was glad that Alix was able to glimpse some of what John keeps hidden from everyone around him. It seemed only fair since he knows EVERYTHING about her.

Alix, I think is even stronger in this book. She has crap hurdled at her by that evil Mariah and I can't help but feel that despite some slips by Alix, she stayed really true and strong. When she does see John's pain, she is compassionate and willingly goes to John to see how he is doing - she genuinely cares for him.

The passion and love between John and Alix is almost tangible in this story. John takes such good care of Alix and in return, Alix reciprocates through love and trust. I can't wait for the next installment!

Fantastic Read!

Fiend picks up exactly where Addict leaves off, with Alix finally discovering the identity of her Master, John; exactly who she secretly hoped it would be. It was easier, though, for Alix to explore her sexuality when there was a certain amount of anonymity. Alix is scared that John will see right through her carefully constructed walls and reject her. John though is determined to not let her run. He wants to claim her as his own: body, soul and mind.

We see John and Alix explore their BDSM relationship and Alix try new experiences. The road doesn't run smoothly as an ex of John's tries to drive a wedge between them to win him back. She plays on Alix's inexperience, insecurities and vulnerability to manipulate situations. For a man who is so cleaver and so in tune with Alix, I was surprised that he did not recognise this.

I loved seeing Alix come alive and find out more about what she wants sexually and who she is. John's strength is what she needs and he is patient with her. Both though still carry secrets that neither are willing to reveal yet but secrets have a way of revealing themselves whether you want them to or not.

This was superbly written, getting the balance right between hot and sensual, and exploring the emotions and feelings of Alix and John. Looking forward to the next instalment.

Good reviews by the authorities in each field, but too pricy

Several leading scholars summarize their research and main contributions in their specialties, e.g., Duffie, Campbell, Singleton, etc.... The chapters are useful for those who already know quite a lot. They are not suitable for a learner.

It is way too over-priced for such a book. As a graduate student, I had to watch my food expenses in order to buy this book. I wish those extremely wealthy authors and the publisher could be less greedy, be more into promoting the scientifc research in financial economics rather than trying to grasp every penny from my pocket.

I don't think this is a book for graduate students (too expensive), however, for professors, it might be worth it.

About the Author
William Manchester was a hugely successful popular historian and renowned biographer. In addition to the first two volumes of The Last Lion, his books include Goodbye, Darkness, A World Lit Only by Fire, The Glory and the Dream, The Arms of Krupp, American Caesar, and The Death of a President, as well as assorted works of journalism. He was awarded the National Humanities Medal and the Abraham Lincoln Literary Award. He passed away in 2004.
 
Paul Reid is an award-winning journalist. In late 2003, Manchester, in failing health, asked him to complete The Last Lion: Defender of the Realm. He lives in North Carolina.

A Worthy Final Volume

I have been nervously awaiting this book for years. My first encounter with Manchester came when volume one first came out. I was a child, and I went to visit my grandmother (who was in London during the Blitz); she held the book up to show me what she was reading. "The man." she said. "The great, great man."

Years later, I read the first two volumes almost in one sitting - couldn't put them down - and have reread large parts of them over the years (every time I looked some piece up I'd find myself sitting down for an hour or two because I couldn't stop). I remember when Finest Hour reported that the trilogy would never be finished: it was like a punch in the stomach.

I had my doubts about the ability of another author to write worthily of Manchester, and I was afraid this volume wouldn't measure up. No need to worry: this is every bit as much a page-turner as the last two volumes. It's not QUITE Manchester - I thought I could feel a bit of a difference in style, somehow - and yet it IS extremely good, much better than I had expected.

Like the first two volumes, we begin with a preamble ("The Lion Hunted") in which we are (re-)acquainted with the book's subject. There is a certain amount of repetition of material from the two earlier preambles, but much good new material as well. I've read thousands of pages on Churchill, but even I found some good new anecdotes and quotations here. After that we're hurled right into the middle of the most dramatic days of World War Two. The unexpected, catastrophic defeats; the incompetence and perfidy of the people in charge of France - it doesn't take much from a writer to make this an exciting story, and yet I don't think it has ever been told better than this. Really, just what I had hoped for from Manchester himself. If the later parts of the book don't quite keep the same level of excitement, neither do the events they recount.

My only complaint is the ending: really, the book just stops. Read the end of volume II: I would have expected Manchester himself to end with a climactic summary, perhaps returning to his major insight from the start: the central significance of Churchill in history is that he was a product of the late nineteenth century who was able to bring the virtues of the era of his formative years to life again at a time when they were needed, and when the British people were not yet too far from them. Actually, I do have one other complaint, and it's with the publisher: the dust jacket doesn't match the first edition dust jackets of the first two volumes. Doesn't look as good on the shelf as I would have liked.

All in all, this is a worthy final volume. Manchester himself would be proud, and there can be no doubt that this trilogy would be Churchill's favourite biography. Highly recommended, to fans of the first two volumes and newcomers alike.

Vol III from a wonderful series on WSC

This is the last volume in a wonderful series of books on Winston Spencer Churchill. I am almost finished with this last book and have learned quite a bit about the man, the country he loved and lead through one of its most challenging times. When you read about all the people Churchill met and worked with or against you can’t help but want to pick up more books to satisfy your curiosity that the book(s) generate. This book was rather big but well worth it. I don’t understand reviewers who found it boring because of the details – you want the details. The details are written in an engaging style that actually have you wanting to know even more details (e.g. Roosevelt’s history or Stalin’s history outside their relationship with Churchill or his representatives).

The book is about more than Churchill who was really a 19th century gentleman in the 20th century trying to keep the British Empire intact. The writing was on the wall when Churchill saw himself lose influence as the two super powers emerged from WWII – the Soviet Union and the USA. I actually felt sorry for him! I also hated him for his myopic view of “brown” people and how they compared to Englishmen but his thoughts and ideas were quite understandable from reading the first two volumes. Was he a great man – he certainly was. Was he flawed – of course – what great man isn’t? The three volumes made learning about Churchill the man who steered, encouraged, and held the mantle for the people and government of England a total delight to read. This third volume was not written by William Manchester and does not have his enjoyable and delightful style of writing but it does hold its own and does a fine job of completing the history of WSC. I cannot recommend this enough for anyone who likes to read, wants the details (e.g. comments from others in their diaries on their feelings about Churchill) augmented by information about the wars and other historical information that took place throughout the life span of the man.

This is an excellent finale to the three book series

This is an excellent finale to the three book series. I have read an awful lot about Winston Churchill by now. He was by no means a perfect person and this book does not represent him as such. But when it is all said and done,,,, Charles DeGaulle, (who had a complicated relationship with alot of the leaders of the Allies), had the band play Fr'ere Victoire when Churchill came to Paris.... And said it was "Only Justice" that it was so.
Papa Victory....Father of the Victory pretty much summed it up. He stood up to Hitler when England was all alone and many in England were trying to figure out how they might arrange a truce. The darkest days of the initial German Invasion... he was in France as the Prime Minister.... He undertook grueling airplane trips to meet with Roosevelt in North Africa and Canada.... he went to Moscow via Africa.... he was not a young man at the time... I was impressed by many things about Churchill, his leadership. His willingness to put his own bacon in the fire without hesitation.... he was a great man and I don't think he is appreciated for how great he was.

The Art of the Articulate Heart

B.H. Fairchild is one of the important American poets. Important for what he has to say and, even more, for the carefully crafted language in which he says it. The is an exceptional book of poetry, and, in my opinion, a manual on articulating, giving voice to, one's heart. I'm tempted here to quote from the poems, doubtlessly the best way to convey the depth and weight of his work but it's hard not to quote, practically, every poem. In a time of "no time," when efficiency has been elevated to a cult and success is measured by how much one can get others to do more work on one's behalf, Fairchild celebrates those who work, day after day, in the anonymity of hard, manual work. This book is for those readers who need to find beauty even in the dread of repetition and obscured futures. This book celebrates the men and women who no one celebrates, a treatise in "soul'making" written in unsentimental, yet passionate, words. How sadly woundrous that people, poets, artists of the depth and scope of B.H. Fairchild remain gold to be mined in the obscure depth of majestic mountains. Yet, just reading his masterful "Body and Soul" should be enough to procure a miner's hat and begin to mine the rock. Like Robert Hass, but in his own way, Fairchild elevates narrative, stories, to the height of pure poetry. It might recall for you, also, the receptive and heart-breaking beauty of James Wright poems, as another reviewer so wisely pointed out. In the poem "Body and Soul," I must mention it again, Fairchild speaks of men who might have witnessed the difference "between talent and genius." I believe I, too, have such experience with these poems.

memories of the future

This is possibly the way forward for poetry, Language and Performance having beaten themselves into an apolitical submission, Fairchild reminds us of the power of honest expression and the value of language for communicating about simple things. There's something almost Wittgensteinian in his embrace of the ordinary and his rejection of the metaphysics of so much of late 20th Century poetics. A truly important work.

Something is wrong with the pricing of this item. It it is listing for over $100 when it should be about $20 retail. Works well with WPuck small rice cooker.
