OUT OF THE EASY is a beautifully crafted novel with an intriguing plot and well-rounded characters. Josie Moraine lives above a book store in New Orleans, having escaped her prostitute mother when she was twelve. Josie has dreams of going to college and having a career, but the most important part of her dreams is leaving New Orleans. One of the prominent secondary characters is Josie's best friend Patrick whose father Charles, a well-known author, owns the bookstore where Josie lives and works. Charles' mental health has deteriorated, and Patrick is desperately trying to hide his disability from the world. Willie, the owner and proprietor of a house of ill repute, is one of Josie's stalwart supporters, although she hides her concern under a gruff exterior. Willie's "nieces" who work at the brothel could easily have become cardboard characters, but each one is a unique individual. Other characters include Cokie, Willie's driver and Jack-of-all-trades, and her cook, Sadie, both of whom want Josie to succeed almost as much as she does. And there's Jesse, a part-time college student and mechanic, who wants to be more than Josie's friend. This rich cast of Josie's friends and mentors provides a contrast to the thugs and mobsters who threaten Josie's dreams and her life.

This novel's plot is as meticulously crafted as its many characters, and readers will be captivated by the complex world Ms. Sepetys has brought to life. Highly recommended!

Something Will Be in Your Eye at the End

'Out of the Easy' is an easy read but then it is a coming of age novel for young adults. The author's style like like a old time fifties' detective novel, with very direct speaking by the protagonist, Josie. 'I spotted Frankie walking towards me on Conti Street.' Josie is essentially an orphan who raises herself, but surrounding her are angels in the form of mostly seedy characters who help her in any way they can. Since she is smart, she longs to leave New Orleans and head to college in the East. So many trials and tribulations are in her way. Will she ever get out?

So, so good!

So, so good. It can be dragging in the middle, but it still didn't stop me from finishing this book. It is a mix of murder-mystery, coming-of-age and a bit of romance, and I love how the author meshed these together to create the story of Josie in 1950s New Orleans. Josie, a daughter of a prostitute, cleans a brothel and sells books at a bookshop for a living. She believes that the only way out of New Orleans is to go to college in Boston. But she must deal with the circumstances of living in a place like New Orleans before she achieves the life she wanted. "Decisions, they shape our destiny" is my favorite quote from this book, and I think it applied to Josie, who has to go through tough decisions to survive in New Orleans. I love how flawed she is, and how the people around her helped her through. I especially loved Jesse Thierry. He's a motorcycle-riding badass that your parents warned you about, but the people close to him know him better as a charming and caring guy. The climax and ending threw me off a little bit, though, but it was still satisfying.

The book is a good read as an introdution to the topic, very good (and rather unusual) is the section on ICT and People Management. In general, there is not much an experienced warehouse manager can take from it as there are not enough details.

Decent tactical-level overview and ideas

I was looking for a book on warehouse management before I set about managing a warehouse management IT implementation. This book was a decent overview. I was looking for something a bit more meaty on the strategic side. If you are looking at the tactical level of warehouse management then this book is for you.

If you have other warehouse management books then you probably won't find anything new in this one. This would make a good first book on the topic.

some errors

On the whole this book is valuable to teachers and writers of creative nonfiction. I have used it for a class in memoir.

Several problems in chapter 13, "The Basics of Good Writing in Any Form," should be brought to the attention of buyers. Sentences that begin the section headed "The Rhythm of Your Sentences" are not all simple sentences as the authors proclaim. In fact, half are complex sentences. Later, what is the imperative is identified as the vocative or command voice. The vocative is a case, not a voice. It has nothing to do with command. Still later a prepositional phrase ("into this world") is identified as a clause that modifies a noun where it clearly modifies the verb, fall. In short, the points the authors seek to make about writing are incorrectly explained and identified.

These elementary errors are significant in a book that may be considered for a textbook for a college class. Not every writer needs to know grammar cold, but every author needs an editor to find grammatical problems and correct them. Someone left a job undone here. My students learned by negative example.

And where the sample essay entitled "A Braided Heart" is excellent and a superb example useful to a teacher or a writer, "The Hazing of Swans" cries for focus and editing. It is clear to observant students and teacher that two authors wrote this book, working as individuals and not as a team.

This Isn't as Wonderful as Some Say It Is

I am not as impressed with this book as other are. I think some elements are helpful, especially the parts about how memoir is not always truth telling as in factual information. But I suspect that people would gain just as much reading the short introduction to Richard Blanco's new memoir and then to read the book which is brilliant (and funny) as anything in this book. I think many of the exercises suggested are trite. I am a retired English teacher (high school and college level) who values writing as a product. And many of those exercises are trite.

A Happy Slant

Brenda Miller and Suzanne Paola have made a good thing even better! This second edition of Tell It Slant (a nod to Emily Dickinson)is updated just enough to make it ready for use for 2012 and beyond without losing the charm and power of the first edition. This text would work in a Creative Writing course OR a Freshman Composition course. In fact, I might propose a new course at our college and use this text for it: Creative Non-Fiction 101! I highly recommend this book for inspiring your own writing, and/or that of your students.

Forming dispassionate trans-national views

After Tamerlane posed the fortunes of the West in terms of `conjunctures, periods of time when certain general conditions in different parts of the world coincided to encourage (or check) the enlargement of trade, the expansion of empires, the exchange of ideas or the movement of people.' Ming's strategic concentration and its concomitant seclusion and `the timing of Manchu consolidation between 1682 and 1750' contradicted determinism and lend credence to the chanciness of events.

Second, the narrative rejected the traditional European definition of modernity, which had obscured the assessment and study of extra-European societies. Darwin's worldwide survey did not support the primacy of the European model. In pre-industrial revolution, both the Ottomans and Chinese held superior ability to mobilize resources and people for a given task. One example was the sultan's vaunted devshirme, who inspired fear in much of continental Europe. Consequently, the swift rise and collapse of European imperialism in Near and Far East exposed a local identity and culture with an inner strength that made European control far from redoubtable. After Tamerlane posed the question: `Is there one modernity, or are there `many modernities'?'

In the conclusion, Darwin challenged readers to see the future without the distortion of conceptual lenses and held a conservative outlook on globalization: `if there is one continuity that to glean from a long view of the past, it is Eurasia's resistance to a uniform system, a single great ruler, or one set of rules.' This Foucaultian analysis defied the craze over the ineluctability of globalization. Those extra-European modernities remain to be plumbed and understood.

Excellent book for beginners

In my opinion this is one of the best books on digital signal processing for beginners. It presents a clear and intuitive explanation of all the fundamental concepts needed for more advanced studies, providing a very good background and solid understanding of this subject.

Great introduction

I have read lots of introductory and advanced dsp books. In my opinion this book is the best book when it comes to learning fundamentals. This was the book along with the book i'll mention later which allowed me to read and understand more advanced books. Explanations are clear and supported with lots of figures and worked examples. Even though software examples provided on it's disk is very primitive and dated, they are still very helpful for beginners. (Source codes available and perfect for validating your understanding about formulas and calculations) I strongly recommend it. Understanding Digital Signal Processing (2nd Edition) by Richard G. Lyons is also great. If possible buy both otherwise buy this one.

Best book on falcon medicine

This book is the best of the best in falcon medicine. Many other avian books are very theoretical and it is difficult to use this knowledge in practice. But this book is different: It is so easy to use in daily life. Very practical oriented, it provides great tips and tricks that make life for falconers and vets much easier. I have treated several of my falcons now with the help of this book and I must really say IT WORKS! Even my vet is so happy that he bought it for himself and uses it now. If you work with falcons, this book is the ultimate must have. It is definitely the best book on falcon medicine on the market.

It's a must for falconers, avian vets that deals with falcons and bird rehabilitators. The huge experience of the author that directs the biggest falcon hospital in the world is impressive. I really suggest this book to interested people.
