Written in simple language in an effort to be all-inclusive, this little book has loads of details about how Chrysler made Pershings and M-3's.

Many illustrations, probably over 100: b&w photos, color photos, hand-tinted photos, and some artist renditions of tanks in the field. The most remarkable is probably the color photo of Chrysler's first tank snapping a telephone pole in half during a "Presentation Day Ceremony" while workers look on.

144 pages, bound in leatherette, probably issued without a dustcover.

This book is a great look at the theories behind economy design

This book is a great look at the theories behind economy design. If you are new to designing economic systems and need a good general overview this is great source material for gaining a valuable foundation. The main reason I didn't rate this book at 5 stars is because I was expecting a little more insight on the design side, where as the book focused much more on analysis side.

The book used a lot of good examples of game economies (such as EVE online and Habbo Hotel) to describe important concepts. It also spent a lot of time explaining the differences between efficient real-world economies and (intentionally) inefficient virtual ones. It contains a robust reference section and detailed footnotes about where to find more information if desired. One thing that bothered me about this were the few times when concepts were presented as important things to know, but then the authors immediately stated that they weren't going to cover them in 'this' book (e.g. Gini Coefficient).

Overall the concepts in this book were well presented and reading it provided a lot of good insights. This general knowledge sparked a lot of good ideas but disappointingly lacked any hands-on exercises for actually designing a virtual economy tying together the concepts in a neat package. It is up to the reader to infer the connections needed for the complex relationships needed when developing today's virtual economies.

I highly recommend reading this book, just don't expect it to leave you without any questions.

A fine, accessible core introduction.

In this volume, doctors Lehdonvirta and Castronova have not only produced an exemplary introduction to how one could and probably also should apply economics to game design. They have also written something that is very close to an optimal tool to teach the core concepts of economics to people maybe more familiar with minutiae of virtual worlds than the complexities of the physical world. In a serious, yet slightly playful and at all times instructive manner, the authors explain both the theories they are using and how those apply to virtual worlds and the real one, with sufficient variance to cater for different environments. The book draws both from Lehdonvirta's design experience and the authors' expertise in economics, economic sociology and so forth, making it highly useful for designers and scholars alike. That is no small task to accomplish, and the work passes that bar with flying colors. Reading tips throughout the way make it even more useful, by simultaneously grounding the arguments with existing frameworks and providing interested readers the next steps to follow at each major point.

This is a book that's of use to designers, researchers, and students, and one I'd immediately place on the reading list of any course teaching facets of understanding - or creating - virtual worlds.

An Excellent Overview of Economics for Game Designers

Vili Lehdonvirta has been one of the leading economists working on virtual economies for a long time. From founding the Virtual Economy Reearch Network through his current position at Oxford, he's been at the forefront of virtual economic research.

But he was also a game programmer, a long time ago. And this book is his attempt to give something back to gaming: if a game is going to be "free to play" and depend on an in-game currency and economy to prosper, then game designers and developers need to know the foundations of micro-economics.

And that's what this book is: a book for game designers and developers, who know very little economics (outside, perhaps, of a few truisms like "prices should end in 9's" or "you should avoid hyperinflation") but know they need to know more.

And it's an excellent introduction to the subject.

Historically oil and gas upstream activities were developed in common law jurisdictions. In the same manner the first model form of Joint Operating Agreements (JOAs) was developed in 1956 by the American Association of Professional Landmen. This historical model form provided the industry with guidance for future generations of JOAs.

Although the JOAs were initially used in common law jurisdictions (US, Canada, UK, etc.) later on it was used in civil law jurisdictions throughout South America, Africa, Europe and Asia. There is no JOA model available in the industry to address all of the requirements from a large variety of civil law perspectives. The Norwegian and Greenlandic authorities offer their own JOA models, which are suitable within these jurisdictions. The AIPN JOA model form 2012 issued a short guidance note for civil law issues. Although this initiative was very much welcomed by the industry, it was not possible to provide extensive guidance on every detail and provide advice on exactly what your JOA provisions should look like at the very end. Therefore, the main issue for the petroleum industry is the fact that large upstream investments could be done based on a contract that might not be enforceable in a civil law jurisdiction.

This book analyses the main issues that a JOA might face within seventeen civil jurisdictions with large oil and gas reserves or at least large potential (including but not limited to Angola, Argentina, Brazil, China, France, Holland, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Mozambique, Norway, Russia, Uzbekistan, Venezuela, etc.). It is a unique and valuable publication for practitioners, legal counsel, businessmen, and academics involved in the upstream industry around the world.

A useful guidance for legal practitioners in the sector.

This is a useful guidance to understand the applicability of these contracts in civil law jurisditions, in the sense that it provides a comparative approach of more than twenty jurisdictions in key topics of a JOA. As for the structure of the book the only comment I have to say is that the chapters are divided by countries rather than the issues or sections of the JOA.

The only reason I put four stars on the book is because of the lack of editorial supervision. For instance, pages 147 and 148 have blatant typos. It seems nobody at Kluwers took enough time to review the content of the book. I wouldn’t be surprise if I cross with more of those errors.

short but good

I am a retired professor of population genetics and I should like to keep myself in the mainstraim of population genetics. There are several recent good books on this topic, but they are quite expensive. Since much time I know the author as one of the best theoretician in population genetics, author of an excellent but hard to understand fully without serious efforts.
The present book is in principle destined to students and the author is supposed to make an effort to render accessible his teaching. In this course, some parts are really very classical and easy to understand - actually, it was what I taught to my own students of "DEUG and "Maîtrise" level. Of course, it was not that which I looked for in this book. For instance I was interested by the concept of "coalescence" which is too recent for I am aware of it during my time of activity. And indeed, it is quite well explained by Gillespie. Frankly speakig, when it comes to the field of which the author is a leading specialist (and which is more familiar to me), things become of more difficult access. But I must confess that I have probably been less hungry of these subjects.
This book will relly bring the students who use it to a high level and they will prepared to access to the most advanced developments of population genetics - provided that they make the necessary effort!

Great explanations, a little math heavy

As a graduate student with some familiarity in population genetics, I found this an excellent review and guide to some more in-depth topics I had not yet thought of. However, sometimes the math was a bit heavy and seemed to weigh a chapter down. I appreciate a decent amount of math, but it was a bit hard to follow. Still, I think it's a useful resource and a very manageable length.

Dear Friend: I hope that you will read my picture book for kids, How the Moon Regained Her Shape (Sylvan Dell, 2006). Influenced by Native American legends, the book is a story about why the moon changes shapes. After the sun bullies the moon, the moon is very hurt and disappears, much to the chagrin of rabbits who miss their moonlit romps and people who miss the beauty of moonlight. With the help of a comet and her many friends on earth, the moon regains her self-confidence and resumes her place in the sky as a bright full moon. The story helps children cope with bullies. Other themes include self-esteem/self-confidence and friendship. An educational appendix gives scientific information about the moon and suggests activities for kids. The illustrator is Ben Hodson, whose artwork is stunning. Independent booksellers have chosen this book as a Book Sense Pick for 2006.

Most children need adult help to cope with persistent bullies. Parents can encourage kids to confide in them about episodes of bullying. Also, parents should teach kids that no one has a right to hurt their feelings or their bodies, no matter how popular, big, or strong the other child is. Schools should conduct anti-bullying workshops with trained counselors.

Good book, author is nice too

Great story about bullying. The author, Janet, came and read the book to my daughter's first grade class, and talked to them about bullying. Wonderful lady.

both strongly positive and strongly negative parts to this book

It is rare I have such ambivalence about a book.

First let's discuss what this book is. It is a tender little tale that highlights the power one's words can have to affect the feelings of others. It also advocates taking a balanced look at oneself rather than clinging to only hurtful things said. This is a positive and needed message. The story is charming the pictures are pretty. THe color palate is very soothing, mostly neutrals and blue-greens. Almost all of the pictures are a double page spread, which is important when reading to young(pre-reading) children because it is easier for them look at the two, open and facing pages as one complete thing. I enjoyed how the representations of the phases of the moon in the corners of each picture followed the text of the story.

Now let's get to the important issue of what this book is not. This book is NOT a Native American story which has been passed orally through generations to impart wisdom and culture to the future. I live in a place where Native American culture isn't visible in the general culture, and even I feel a responsibility to point this out to children I share this story with. I'm surprised to read there is such confusion about this point. The character of the moon looks a lot like a kokopelli, which is never an image of a personified moon, and the character of the comet (quite shockingly) has hair that looks as if it belongs in Japanese anime. It is clear to me that the author and illustrator don't even want to try to pass this off as genuine. Yet, I repeatedly read summaries and reviews about this story which appear to think the story is authentic.

TO skip over this important issue is unkind and insensitive, the two antagonistic traits of the Sun in this story. Too ironic.

If the world worked the way I would like it too, I would have any reprintings of this book include extension pages with activities that explore Native Culture just as the book already carries moon extension pages.
