About the Author

Maryanne Kearny Datesman is the author of several ESL reading texts. She has taught ESL and administered programs at Western Kentucky University and American University, and she has taught also at Georgetown University. In Kentucky, she established and administered a private language school and directed programs for refugees. She was co-founder of Kentucky TESOL and is a former president of WATESOL.

JoAnn (Jodi) Crandall is a professor of education at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. At UMBC she had co-directed the master's program in ESOL/Bilingual Education and directed the interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Language, Literacy and Culture. She is a former president of TESOL and AAAL (American Association for Applied Linguistics) and a frequent speaker at national and international conferences.

Edward N. Kearny is professor emeritus of government at Western Kentucky University. He earned his Ph.D. in government from American University in 1968. He also holds a bachelor's degree in economics and a master's degree in psychology, and he has written a number of books and articles on American politics.

very good book

I wish I had bought this book long time ago. It explains where american customs, behaviors, values etc. come from and makes it easy to understand why people here act how they act. Would recomend to everybody who is interested in American culture or wants to visit. For someone who is moving over here it's a must! People here are much different than in Europe (where I come from) and I would have been much less frustrated if I had bought this book earlier. The language used in this book is easy and the more difficult words are explained on the bottom.

American culture from the outside

I used this book recently teaching an advanced ESL class, and I found it as interesting for me as it was for the students. The chapters are organized around a set of principles that, in the authors' view, define American society and culture, and it's written specifically for foreign born residents of the US. Among the subjects treated are religion in the US, American business, the West and the frontier tradition, race, families, the legal system, etc. It was fascinating for me to read along with my students from a fresh perspective. An American might argue with the nuances--is there really a "national religion" of belief in God and patriotism, for example? I'm not sure I'd call it that, but that's only a detail. I can even see this book being used in a high school history course--I thought the explanations of the links between history and culture were fascinating. Highly recommended.

American Ways provides thoughtfully descriptive and critical insights to a general understanding of american culture, not only for students intending to live in the USA, but also for students taking a discussion course in advanced English or who want to pursue a future career as english teachers. Given the inherent link that develops between language and culture, this textbook provides a huge variety of culturally sensitive activities raging all linguistic skills, that help the students reflect on the importance and impact of american culture in their lives; making them create meaningful connections with their own cultural backgrounds and countries of origin. It also gives both, teacher and students, the possibility to explore intenet resources, literature suggestions and film affinities that can contribute to the full completion of a powerful course on the comprehension of the United Sates' construction of history, society, and culture. Easy to read, critical and fun. Nicely updated to our current times.

Packed Full of Pearls!

This book is packed full of many pearls and clinical insights not to be found in other similarly sized texts. "The Essentials" is the "CliffsNotes" version of the universally agreed upon "Bible" of Neuro-Ophthalmology, the definitive three volume 6th edition Walsh and Hoyt's Clinical Neuro-Ophthalmology, written and edited by over 60 experts in the field. "The Essentials" is an excellent resource for general ophthalmologists and neurologists. It also serves the neuro-ophthalmologist well as an overview of the more in depth Walsh and Hoyt's. I highly recommend it.

It contains many incomplete words with symbols

The digital transcription in Spanish is dreadful. Each page takes about misspelling, incomplete word and symbols instead of letters.
The content is very good, however these orthographic errors interfere with a coherent reading.
I would like to read a corrected version of this book, otherwise, I do not think I finalize reading without having frustrated a decent reading.

The product was great, the service provided I can't complaint. this book my dad always wanted, I finally founded. This book talks about the bible, as a kid my dad always talked about it, I recommended for people to get more knowledge on Jesus and I hope they can buy it to see for themselves.

This Particular book is dear to me. I read it when I was a young girl while I lived in a Catholic boarding School in Peru run by Fransican nuns.
I searched looking to find it to read it after many years. I was lucky to find it here.
It's the most compelling history of the live of Jesus not much as the son of God but as a human being and to the people that sorrounded Him.
I bought 4 copies to give it as presents. I wanted to share this memorable history. I still read it from time to time!.
I love it, it takes me back to the days when I was inocent and carefree!

EXCELLENT BOOK!!!!

This book far exceeded my expectations! With over 300 illustrations ranging from equine, feline, canine,etc. it covers a huge variety of systems and muscle groups! Was very, very impressed! My high school (within LAUSD) is creating a zoology class in the next year, and I have recommended this book to them which will be the main source for all the worksheet and labeling assignments!! Very detailed book and the pictures are extremely sharp and accurate! Very, very good product for the price. I can't recommend it enough. Each animal type is categorized by body positions and anatomical views, rendering a complete view of the animal over several different sections in the book.

A typical layout of any page will include:

1) the anatomical view of the animal
2) 22+ different labels of the sanctioned (according to #chapter) parts to color!
3) Description of the system at the top of the page (what you are looking at)
4) Clean, non-waxed or glossy paper, to color on
...and more!!!!

But to any potential buyers, whether you are a vet student, zoologist, animal system aficionado, or simply have a minor interest in animal sciences and anatomy (like me), then I highly recommend this book for you! I would not recommend buying a textbook that runs from $50-$98, until you buy this book. For only a fraction of the cost of veterinary textbooks, it serves as a great introduction to veterinary medicine and anatomy!

*** I would suggest buying a 2" binder, photocopying (at work or a friend's office, the pages of interest to you) and then storing it in the binder and keeping the book in your library for safe-keeping. That way you can have a more professional reference tool and sell the book, "unmarked" and in "like new condition" in the future! Thanks for reading the review!

Amazing book and study tool

I bought this book about a month ago, and ever since then, I've been coloring in it everyday. I'm a Veterinary Technology student and one of my hardest classes right now is Animal Anatomy. This book covers so much that it has really helped me with my studies. It covers not just canine and feline, but bovine and equine as well. The equine has really helped this far in my semester because that's what my whole semester is based on. It helps me study for tests and it's proven to really help when trying to recall certain parts. I can close my eyes during a test and picture what I colored and the color of that specific part. I would recommend this book to any veterinary technology student, veterinary medicine student, or anyone that just wanted to learn about the anatomy of these animals.

This Could Be a Lot Better

Unlike my human A&P coloring book, a majority of this book's pictures contain multiple systems, which gives it a jumbled appearance. I would frequently have to search through the entire book just to find the pictures that contain some bones, muscles, etc. The pictures themselves range from poor-quality to decent/good.

That stated, it is better than nothing if anatomy coloring books help you, and it's pretty much the only option you have for animal A&P. It simply needs to be restructured into a more concise layout.

About the Author
James Miller earned his Ph.D. in history from Indiana University. After teaching at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, he was an editor in economics and history. He lives in Charlottesville, Virginia and is currently writing a biography of a Revolutionary War hero.

John Thompson is the author of six National Geographic books, and is currently researching a book on Benedict Arnold's march to Quebec. He lives with his family in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Hugh Ambrose currently serves as Historical Consultant for a miniseries about WWII being developed by Stephen Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and HBO. He is a Founding Board Member of The National D-Day Museum in New Orleans where he lives.

Must have for all ages!

I had borrowed this book from our local library and was very impressed. There's so much information in it and so many great pictures...it is worth having on your shelf and you will refer to it often as you look up historical words or questions you run into, your children can use it for school...It is the only book of this kind, that I could find, that has the entire history and is not concentrating on just one time-period or subject abt. American history. I also bought the "world history" one from National Georaphic. It is a great price and I haven't seen it at this price anywhere else (trust me I've done some research before buying).

Beautifully illustrated reference book

The National Geographic Almanac of American History makes a wonderful reference book on American history if one is looking for one title that covers American history from prehistory to the present. The book is very user-friendly and well-organized, and is divided into the following:

Though I wouldn't say this book is exhaustive in its scope, it is wide and the work is enhanced by more than 200 illustrations and maps. The essays that cover some milestone events are insightful and the illustrated time lines of important events are very useful. For those who like to read a history book with lavish illustrations, this book does an admirable job and is well-worth the money, especially at the discounted rate offered here. It makes an excellent supplementary reference tool for students, history aficionados, and reference book collectors, and would enhance any personal library. A great companion work to this would be the "Almanac of World History" also by National Geographic.

This book seems to have been written to run about 500 pages before it was cut down to its final length of 338 pages. many of the sections I've read have been difficult to truly understand--sometimes the authors makes claims that need more explanation, and other times the sentences or paragraphs seem to be non sequitors. Great images, though.

The book provides an introduction to SCM. The three parts on information and material flows and partnerships cover basic issues of SCM well, but stay brief as intended by the authors. The separation of the three issues works out well. Still, the integration and interdependence of material and information flows might be presented clearer. The management of partnerships addresses a different conceptual framework, that really makes the difference of SCM to traditional relations to suppliers or customers. Students or managers looking for a first introduction to SCM will benefit from the book. Being concise always means to neglect certain aspects. Still, the covered topics provide the introduction, the book aims for. I plan to adopt parts of it for a course in SCM.

A must have SCM book but you need more!

I finally decide to give a comment of this book after had it for a couple of year. Handfield and Nichols wrote this book *too* general and not emphasize in any research/application trend of Supply Chain Management(SCM). As a student, I found this book is the first -but not only one- book for anyone who doesn't know about the SCM. IF you do know and need a "concise book" that you can finish in a night, get this one. Another disadvantage is no technical definition and implementation issues. Case studies are ok -but again, too general.

Good Overview for Managers

I think this is a good introduction to Supply Chain Management. I would have enjoyed a more in-depth discussion of some of the competing products and technology. Important areas such as warehouse management, ERP and middleware, CSM and transportation were sorely missed but then again it is only 183 pages so it was not meant to be comprehensive. Not a bad book but not enough for those with a serious interest in this topic.

In an elegant, magnificently illustrated treatment of Orange County open spaces, Schoenherr has brought forward basic ecological principles, applied them to local communities and habitats, and produced a superb guide to the natural history of open spaces of Orange County. This reader friendly text by a longtime Laguna Beach ecologist is a classic that is a must for anyone interested in the outdoors and the ecology of the region. --Peter A. About the Author
Dr. Schoenherr is an emeritus Professor of Ecology at Fullerton College in southern California. He also has taught a variety of ecology classes at the University of California, Irvine, and California State University at Fullerton. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Southern California, and his Ph.D. from Arizona State University. A recognized authority on California, he is the author of two major books on the state. A NATURAL HISTORY OF CALIFORNIA (University of California Press, 1992) is a 772-page compendium on the plants, animals, and geology of California. His more recent publication, NATURAL HISTORY OF THE ISLANDS OF CALIFORNIA (University of California Press, 1999), is a 491 page discussion of all the islands of California including those in San Francisco Bay. An accomplished nature photographer, he has provided the photographs to illustrate his books and he has received two awards for his images of California Gray Whales.
