From Publishers Weekly
It would perhaps be asking too much for a biography of the 14th Dalai Lama, divinely appointed leader of Tibet, to treat its subject with a skeptical eye, particularly when it's obviously being written from a teach-the-children perspective. Any sense of skeptical inquiry is resolutely not what writer/illustrator Saiwai (an educational Manga artist and puppeteer) is up to in this brisk and action-packed overview of the Dalai Lama's life. Starting in calamity in 1939 with the passing of the 13th Dalai Lama and the locating of his reincarnation in two-year-old Tenzin Gyatso, Saiwai moves quickly through the major signposts of Tenzin's life. Drama is cranked to the max, with bellowing mouths and frequent exclamations of rage or despair as the ancient mountain kingdom of Tibet falls to the crushing dictatorial oppression of Mao's China. Eventually it is revealed that the story is styled mostly as an autobiographical speech delivered by Tenzin to an adoring multinational crowd. While Tenzin's life is inarguably one of great faith, determination, and generosity, Tetsu's lack of perspective ultimately works to flatten, not enhance, the story. (Sept.)

From Booklist
Saiwai, a manga artist known for his treatments of educational topics, turns his pen to the fourteenth Dalai Lama, whose struggles to free Tibet from Chinese rule earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. The gripping story, illuminating the atrocities of the Chinese takeover, is told from the Dalai Lama’s point of view and makes the holy leader seem all too human. Saiwai ends his clearly drawn tale with the beginning of the holy man’s exile in India and ties things together with an epilogue. There is a bibliography, but a character guide would have helped to keep the many monks straight in readers’ minds. Though this story isn’t quite a complete biography—and though manga purists might object to Penguin’s decision to publish it in a left-to-right format—it nevertheless makes a nice addition to school and public library collections. Readers, especially teenagers, will wonder what they would have done if they had such power and responsibility thrust upon them at such a young age. Grades 7-12. --Snow Wildsmith

Intelligent, effective manga about Tibet
By GraphicNovelReporter.com
The life of a Dalai Lama is obviously not an easy one: promoting peace and spirituality in the midst of insurmountable conflict, being thrust into a position of enormous power at a very young age, and living with the inescapable weight of an entire fading country on your shoulders. As a reader who is an outsider to the world of foreign politics, understanding the position of the Dalai Lama in Tibet's political and spiritual existence definitely isn't easy, but it's spelled out here in enough simplified detail to tell a solid story while providing a gateway into a much larger, bloodier scene.

Initially, it's easy to dismiss The 14th Dalai Lama as a work of manga for the sake of being manga: It's a popular format that sells very well and, subsequently, is relatively easy to capitalize on. Even as a reader who doesn't often enjoy or comprehend the appeal of manga, I found that Tetsu Saiwai's art and storytelling stand up by themselves as pure, excellent narrative. The artwork doesn't feature the bizarre exaggerations of many fantastical manga stories, or the emotional, hazy dreamscapes that haunt the genre. This particular volume isn't even read back-to-front. In many ways, this resembles American comic traditions much more strongly than Asian ones, making it accessible to multiple audiences. Manga is thematically appropriate when visually discussing matters of history that have taken place in Asia, after all.

Narratively, the biography is told with the Dalai Lama as protagonist, so the Chinese are consistently portrayed as deceptive, violent, and perpetually angry, making them a cartoonishly nefarious group of characters without actually stepping into racist territory. This biography focuses on many critical events with succinct vignettes, but makes a giant leap through time from 1959 to 2009. Fifty years of the Dalai Lama's life, which are presumably not as interesting as his first years as leader, are omitted for the sake of space. Of course, the struggle of Tibet is not a story that has ended yet, and the life and work of the Dalai Lama continues, but the lack of 50 years of landmarks implies that he spent half of a century without taking any major initiatives, which is obviously false. Very basic research about Tibetan politics prior to China's invasion also reveal a much more complex picture of a Tibet that endured practices of slavery and forced mutilation, but the most important aspect of this book is the idea that it provokes a very real interest in a much deeper picture of a fascinating, important subject. Ultimately, it is intelligent and effective.

Because these politics are violent, the death of women and children is prominent, but never graphic. The subject matter skews toward an older audience despite the nature of the art, so don't be misled by the appearance of The 14th Dalai Lama--keep it in the teen collection, but definitely keep it.

Will non-violence free Tibet? A graphic novel's saga
By John L Murphy
Inspired by non-violence and inked as a story of Tenzin Gyatso's struggle as he matures within a homeland under Communist invasion, this simple depiction illustrates the tensions. Idyllic panoramas heighten the contrast with the massacres of innocents, for this Tibet's filled with resistance to Chinese genocide, and Mao's reprisals after he fails to manipulate the Dalai Lama and the second leader, the Panchen Lama, into being puppets for a utopian ideology that masks cultural and political and religious extermination. The style is in the "manga" manner of large faces, not a lot of subtle detail, and direct linear expression of emotions and action.

This could be used to teach younger readers; I gave it to my teenaged son, given a curiosity about Buddhism (he's never read about it) and a love of graphic novels. There's a lot of attention to the diplomatic dissension during the 1950s, and this provides the main plot. Those expecting a broader look at the Dalai Lama's life in exile will not find as much here, but for an introduction to what Tibet faced after Mao's triumph spread his ambitions towards Tibet, this is a swift, and effective primer that sets out the challenges of what happens when arms are taken up and world attention sought, but when both fail against a massive occupation.

Saiwai credits Martin Scorsese's "Kundun" among his sources, and the cinematic nature of this book shows in juxtapositions of the backs of the heads of praying monks with the face of a benevolent giant, triple-faced Buddha, or the last glimpse of the Potola palace by the fleeing Dalai Lama as he disguised hastens into exile from a Lhasa bombarded by an army that claims to be the people's liberators.

I found this an effective reminder of the difficult message of the Dalai Lama that violence no matter how "moral" as intended sparks further reprisals, and often deadlier repression. All options are explained, the violent as well as the pacifist, and the complexity of options and the futility of rebellion darken the tone. There's not much about Buddhism itself, but citation of teachings on peace gain effective placement at key points as the Dalai Lama reminds himself of them.

Saiwai takes pains to be fair to all sides in this saga, but he emphasizes the Buddhist reminder "how anger and hatred can grow inside and cloud people's vision." He shows the Dalai Lama trying to bring about peaceful reform for Tibet, and how this effort was ruined by the imperialism that was foisted upon his countrymen and women as if an anti-colonial opportunity to overthrow feudalism. The factions bicker, the CIA hovers, the Cold War uses this land as its staging ground and as its ignored entity, for Nepal, India, England, and America all turn away as Tibet faces attack.

Today, the situation does not differ much. The Dalai Lama for most of these panels, first round-eyed and happy, later bespectacled and bereft, is shown trying to guide his people as China outwits and outnumbers them. Later, he travels the world preaching his appeal to find harmony with one's foes, and this entreaty widens as Sensai portays the need for progress in a China shown in need, post-Tienanmen Square, of the same hopes for its people as those that Tibetans try to achieve.

The main story begins as the Dalai Lama in 2009 tells of his coming of age. A coda recaps his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech in 1989, with his hope for Tibet's survival, appending an update on the arrival of the rail line to Lhasa that allows further weakening of Tibetan traditions as the Communist regime seeks a "sinicization" of the vast plateau, as migrants already outnumber the six million Tibetans there.

Saiwai shows the Dalai Lama talking to crowds, finding room for orphans who have fled the same homeland as he had, and attempting to convince a world where few leaders hear what many ordinary folks in his audiences may come to accept: the restoration of Tibet as a natural park, the arrival of peace to its people, and the autonomy of their homeland. Meanwhile, the Chinese import their people, strip its resources, and crush its resistance. Whether this tale has a happy ending remains ambiguous. Impermanence remains.

Great opportunity to learn about His Holiness in a fun way
By Nate DeMontigny
A while back, I reviewed another manga/ graphic novel about Je Tsongkhapa. I was excited to read one day on The Worst Horse about a manga that had been done about His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.

Manga is the Japanese word for comics. Summed up, mangas can come in a variety of forms. Whether it's a serial comic, or like this book, done as a complete work, a graphic novel.

The artist behind "The 14th Dalai Lama: A Manga Biography" is none other than Tetsu Saiwai. With a body of work spanning 20 years, Tetsu's main interests as far as topics for his mangas go are human rights and environmental issues.

Tetsu took his inspiration for the storyline from Scorsese's "Kundun" and His Holiness' book "Freedom In Exile." If you've seen and or read the two titles, you will see where the similarities are. Heinrich Harrer, the main focus of the movie "Seven Years In Tibet", makes an appearance in the manga as well.

For those that are looking for a cut through the bull, and brief, explanation of how His Holiness was found, and what he went through as a child, than "The 14th Dalai Lama: A Manga Biography" will definitely do so. It also boils down the brutal takeover of Tibet by the Chinese Communist machine. I enjoyed how Tetsu was able to create certain emotions in his characters, which followed the storyline very well.

I am grateful that Testu has written/ created such a graphic novel. I think this manga may help people truly understand what Tibetans have been fighting for, and what was taken away from them. I believe "The 14th Dalai Lama: A Manga Biography" is an enlightening, yet fun, biography about one of the most important people of our time.

We all know his name, but how many of us really know who the Dalai Lama is? Do we all know where he came from, and how he came to be what he is today? No, I don't think everyone does. So again, I applaud Tetsu for taking this story on and making His Holiness accessible to everyone.

"The 14th Dalai Lama: A Manga Biography" is a quick, yet enjoyable read. I'd recommend it to anyone who is curious about His Holiness and Tibet, for those that are fans of non-fiction mangas or for anyone who truly enjoys graphic artistry. Highly recommended!

"How many guys are in a baseball team? If we get that many books (or more) in this series, I'll be in heaven. I cannot stress enough how wonderful this series is. So much to read, so much to think about and so much to feel. I can't wait for the next book and I'll probably end up reading them all at least once a year." Andrea M, Amazon Review
"The writing is tight, and the situations move from superficial to meaningful to gripping to dangerous in a flow that is natural and well handled. I read the entire thing in one day because I didn't want to stop until I knew how it ended. What an ending it was! This is one I'll read more than once just for the shear pleasure of reading it again."
Joe, Amazon Review

Pretty good!
By LetyM
I really like this. This should be labeled in part a ROMCOM because there are parts in here that are laugh out load hilarious but by the same token there are heart wrenching moments.

Both Kane and Eliana (love the name) are great well rounded characters. The way that they met is hilarious and o.k. not so realistic but this is fiction folks just go with it. Their romance was also not so realistic, but then again I guess it could be possible. In a nutshell their romance is a whirlwind. In a matter of 2 weeks, they are engaged and living together. I'm not a 50 shades fan, never read the books, don't intend on reading the books, but if you like 50 shades there are some references in this book. I'm glad Ms. Ward explained the reference because I wouldn't have gotten it otherwise ;-b.

Kane's family is wonderful, most especially his Nana, totally loved this woman! Even though these people have tons of money they are written very down to earth and loving. Eliana's mother on the other hand is a total nut bag. Kane and his family more than made up for her mother's shortcomings. They knew right away that she was genuine and loved and accepted her into their family.

I really enjoy books that deal with real life situations and their ramifications. Revenge porn, HMMM, this is something that not very many people think about, least of all me, but it is very real. I hear about it on the new when it happens to famous people but not so much when it happens to real people. Well it does, and I really enjoyed reading how this affected Eliana. I felt it to the bone, her heart ache, his doubts, it was heart wrenching.

So this book has a little of everything, I laughed and cried throughout. I kind of figured out who the culprits of the scandal were but how it came together was really good.

This is a light read but really good. I first read it as for free through my Kindle Unlimited option but ended up buying it I like it so much. I love baseball so it didn't hurt that it actually had some baseball action in the book. Also, the book I bought has several other stories so it was worth it. I'm looking forward to reading the other stories as well.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6-Moominpappa has a terrible cold and decides that the best thing to do under the circumstances is to remain quiet and compile his memoirs. In a ponderous manner, he writes of his escape from a foundling home, his link-ups with Joxter, Muddler, and Hodgekins, and the escapades that follow. He reads the chapters aloud to his own little Moomintroll and to the sons of his fellow adventurers. Often they react as many readers will: "But all those sad feelings...are a bit unnecessary. It's all so long." Warburton's translation retains the witty and clever tone of the Finnish writer's tales of Moominland, but the allusions and sardonic humor are often too sophisticated to appeal to the young audience this animal fantasy is likely to attract. For instance, Moominmanna responds to one of Moominpappa's readings, "'Everything'll be much more vivid if you have some passages where you aren't bragging.'" The story moves slowly and the characters, with the exception of the Muddler, don't come alive. A selection mainly for fans of the author's previous stories set in Moominland.

Not a good introduction, but still among one of the best!
By A Customer
After Moominsummer madness, Tove Jannson slipped into a more subtle and even philosophical vein (that is, more philosophical then the first three books), however, Memoirs (formerly Exploits of Moominpapa) returns to the more slapstick antics of her early book. Although I am a fan of all of these books, Memoirs was a welcome return to that earlier style, though it in itself is a unique entry in the series. In Memoirs, Moominpapa is both a wonderfully adorable character as well as a characture or himself, filled with pride, egotism, and prejudice--making him all the more human. The story itself is almost a parody of the big rolling adventure tales, full of various fantastic happenings, and culminating in Moominpapa's dilemma: to following his adventuring instinct, or another instinct that drives him to build moominhouses with moomin verandahs, etc etc... The end is as happy as finn family moomintroll, maybe even happier--completely over the top. Although this shouldn't be the first moominbook to read (since knowledge of the characters is pretty central to the humor here) it is nonetheless one of the most uplifting books in the series and I can't recommend it more!!!

A truly magical world
By Michael Fridman
Tove Jansson was a Swedish-speaking Finnish writer and illustrator who wrote many childrens books including the famous Moomin series. Here, the setting is Moominvalley which is basically the natural beauty and pristineness of Finland, populated by Moomins (who look like little hippos which stand upright and are fluffy) and a host of other weird and wonderful creatures. The action is mainly centred around the family with Moominpappa, Moominmamma and Moomintroll the kid. They set a tone for the whole series as Tove infused them and their whole universe with experiences of her own family which seem to have been a very bohemian, artistic, tolerant and warm lot. This makes the books great reading for kids from an early age as they invoke a wonderful sense of fun and silliness as well as acceptance and openmindedness.

One thing I remember from reading these as a kid is that the plot didn't really matter. In some books, it's hard to say exactly what happens. Rather, it is the atmosphere that I found the most important. In this book, Moominpappa writes his memoirs of his adventures when he ran away from home as a boy, and his encounters with creatures like an undignified prankster king.

A great series overall, filled with imagination, surrealism, fun and warmth.

Not At All the Same as Moominpappa's Memoirs
By Atli Hafsteinsson
I knew that The Exploits of Moominpappa was an earlier version of Moominpappa's Memoirs, but those who have not read both books will not appreciate the sheer difference in not only the text but the subtext as well.

Entire passages from Moominpappa's Memoirs are simply not present in Exploits. The incident with the broken ice and Moominpappa's depression are not even present. On the other hand, the dialogue and relationships between the characters feels much warmer, somehow, in Exploits. It's more direct and to the point than Memoirs, and Moominpappa is somehow less egocentric in his retelling in Exploits. His many recounts on, for example, the stars of his birth and the behaviours of Mymbles is not here, and his relationship with the Hemulen is much less of a focal point (that whole part of his story is much shorter in Exploits). The number of interactions between his family as he's writing the book is also much less in Exploits; the beginning chapter of Memoirs is not present here.

Even the plot points that the two books share are often noticeably different, with different dialogue and motives. Moominpappa and Hodgkin's falling out doesn't happen in Exploits, and there is even a second island.

So you see, Exploits and Memoirs are not at all the same, and I recommend both books for fans. Both books have something to offer that the other lacks.

"A badly needed addition to public and military libraries and to the shelves of every military writer … a definitive job." — Army Times
Megiddo, Thermopylae, Waterloo, Stalingrad, Vietnam … nothing has dominated man's attention, challenged his energy, produced more heroes — and destruction — than war. This monumental one-volume work traces the long history of that uniquely human activity in vivid, accurate accounts of over 1,500 crucial military conflicts, Spanning more than 3,400 years, it encompasses a panorama of warfare so complete that no single volume like it exists.
All the essential details of every major battle in recorded history on land and at sea — from the first battle of Megiddo in 1479 B. C. to Grenada in 1984 — are covered. For added convenience, this work lists the engagements in alphabetical order, from "Aachen," the first entry, to "Zutphen," the last.
You'll find painstakingly researched, objectively written descriptions of the Persia-Greek conflicts of the fifth century B. C., Roman Empire wars, Napoleonic Wars, the American Civil War, World Wars I and II, and many more. Also included are penetrating analyses of the roles played by commanders of genius — Alexander, Julius Caesar, Hannibal, Napoleon, Genghis Khan, Tamerlane, Khalid ibn al-Walid, and other momentous figures. Updating this already comprehensive resource, a new Appendix deals with more recent conflicts: the Vietnam War, the Yom Kippur War, the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, the Iran-Iraq War, the Falkland Islands clash, the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, and the U. S. invasion of Grenada.
Each entry includes states, strategic situations, military leaders, troop numbers, tactics, casualties and military/political consequences of the battles. In addition, you'll find cross references at the end of each entry, 99 battle maps and a comprehensive index containing titles and alliances and treaties, famous quotations, slogans, catch phrases … even battle cries.
An Encyclopedia of Battles is an entire library of military history in one convenient space-saving volume. Students, historians, writers, military buffs … anyone interested in the subject will find this inexpensive paperbound edition an indispensable reference and a fascinating study of the world's military past.

This is a "must have" reference for all history buffs!
By A Customer
I ran across the first edition of this book over 25 years ago while in high school and still consider it one of my most valued references. The current edition covers the history of warfare up to 1985, and a new edition would be great, but it is still an incredible resource. Every battle of any significance from the dawn of recorded history is represented by an entry, 99 of which are accompanied by a small map. The battles are listed in alphabetical order, but the author helpfully lists the chronologically preceding and following battle of a campaign or war at the end of each entry, so that you can easily place each battle in its historical context. There are also separate entries for each war which lists all the battles for which there is an entry in the book. The individual battle descriptions are sometimes terse and lacking detail, but for the most part, the key strategic, political, and tactical issues are addressed. Summaries of losses in personnel and equipment are usually included. But don't get the impression that this is a dry, boring tome of dates and statistics! This book is a great pleasure to read. Each vignette is well-written and often includes the fascinating little tibits of humanity that make the history of man's terrible penchant for conflict such a compelling subject of study.

As Handy as It Gets
By Amazon Customer
This is a nice battle dictionary, from the most ancient times to 1984, with special attention to US involvement but every battle with any major importance is included. It's a basic introductory work and the level of detail is somewhat low, so anyone looking for intensive reference, especially if interested in the purely military aspects, should of course look elsewhere, but it's still good for the casual reader.

What this book is very good at is getting you interested in the historic importance of the events. All descriptions include references of what led to the battle and what resulted of it, of course both usually more battles, whose names are added to the end of every description; so you can never have only one. You can also look for the name of a war instead of an specific battle, and you'll get a list of its battles; or the name of a country for an extensive list of all-time battles. An index of places and people is of course also included, so navigation is really easy as well as tempting and engaging.

This paperback edition is quite sturdy and the pages won't fall off unless you try really hard.

Time Eater
By A Customer
This book is an excellent reference book, providing a number of quick and easy ways to find out about a given battle. It has rarely failed me, and then in inconsequential battles which I could not find elsewhere. It has generally provided me with the information I needed in a precise and comprehensive form.
But the problem is that at the bottom of each article is a reference to the battle preceding and the battle following. I just naturally have to look them up and then the ones before and after those. Then I get distracted and read the article preceding or following the one I had sought and go off following those battles and wars. Thus I spend half and hour to two hours when I just wanted to find one bit of information. It is delightful to do so, but the book is a very effective time eater.

Review
"Though the authors have expertise in their subject, and it shows, they also write engagingly, explaining production methods and yield analysis in a way that a general audience can understand, and that will hopefully inspire industry to put these ideas into practice." —Jeff Fleischer, Foreword Reviews

"An excellent book . . . the message is clear and convincing: We can’t go on using materials the way we have been for the past 150 years, but fortunately, we don’t have to. We can meet the world’s growing need for the stuff of modern life, avoid the worst effects of climate change, and preserve the environment for future generations . . . . Although the topic can be dry as a desert, the authors keep it light with lots of colorful illustrations and clever analogies without sacrificing clarity or rigor. I learned a lot from this thoughtful look at a critical topic." —Bill Gates, gatesnotes.com on first edition

DOING MORE WITH LESS
By DAVID BRYSON
The planet that we live on, and that we depend on for our day-to-day sustenance and survival, is not a bottomless pit. It needs no engineering professors come from Cambridge to tell us this, you may say, but the message seems only to be sinking in very haphazardly with the general public. There must be whole libraries of learned tomes on the subject of sustainable resources, but what we have here is a textbook that also does its best to be readable by the rest of us. It’s ourselves – the voting public – who really matter, because we have the numbers to force through change if we can stir ourselves to do that.

How near a date is 2050, would you say? I won’t be alive then, but my children ought to be and my grandchildren will still be in their 30s. By that date the world community is supposed to have halved its carbon emissions, the ‘greenhouse gases’ widely believed among scientists to be warming our environment to a dangerous extent, and it looks as if we had better believe that and do something about it before it’s all too late. It’s over-production and over-consumption that are doing the damage, so the route to a solution, if there is one, must be to get all that under control. The watchword is ‘sustainable’. Slowing down our over-consumption is good so far as it goes, but it is only postponing disaster. We owe it to generations we will never know that they should have a habitable planet, and this ambitious book with its positive message deserves thanks as well as credit for organising our thinking for us.

The bulk of the carbon emissions come from steel and aluminium processing, so the analysis is mainly concerned with those industries, with shorter sections on cement, paper and plastics, although even the clothing trade makes a brief appearance. The authors see it as necessary to look at the issues with two eyes rather than one, and it would be hard not to agree. To me as I read carefully the distinction was not as clear or firm as it is to the writers. I was looking for a step-change from one category to the other, and I only found it partially. In the ‘one-eyed’ perceptions the story was all about managerial efficiencies – letting less product go to waste, avoiding over-specification, technological advances etc. When we open both eyes we actually find a good deal more of the same sort of thing, just tightened up. I was looking for strategy, not just super-housekeeping, important indeed essential though that is. The strategic insights are allowed to peep through, and one can hardly blame the authors for being so canny about them. What is needed is a change of the public mind, and politics being politics and folks being folks that is going to invite obvious comparisons with Mao’s Great Leap Forward and other even worse initiatives: how do you change the public mind? With difficulty, I guess, but unless we, the public, change it for ourselves the blight is going to be creeping up on us while we try to look the other way or blame it on political attitudes.

How do you feel about living with less? In my early years, just after the war, it seemed a simple straight-line graph of increasing prosperity. The seventies gave us pause, but not for long, and we resumed our merry way until it became clear that there was no straight line. At last we the public were beginning to understand that we had a job to do in gaining a grasp of the underlying realities and not just leaving it all to our politicians while at the same time affecting not to believe anything they said. We tried ‘revolution’ and such like childishness, but gradually we understood that we needed, however reluctantly, to inform ourselves. And that is where this fine book comes in. It is (so far as I can tell) a reputable scientific textbook by reputable academic scientists that gives the rest of us the chance to gain a proper understanding of an issue that that has no respect for our status, academic, scientific, politically committed or anything else of the kind.

Even at the ‘one-eyed’ level, the cultural changes called for are mind-boggling. After decades of doing obeisance to growth in the GDP how are we going to adapt to lower production levels and cars that will last for 20 years while inflicting on us the ultimate indignity of having to wind down the windows by hand? I don’t know, but again the authors have an en-passant remark at one point to the effect that such attitudinal adjustments tend to come about when the ogre is staring us in the face.

There is one real and urgent warning to be given. Aside from a reference in a footnote, the book has one reference to nuclear electricity generation, which it welcomes with innocent enthusiasm. I wonder whether the authors can have read Nuclear Power by Walter C Paterson, another very readable (and also quite short) volume. To believe that the transportation and storage of nuclear wastes can ever be safe you have to do what our authors here do and simply ignore the issues. On the one hand Allwood and Cullen are admirably honest in refusing to commit to Carbon Capture and Storage. Too right, but the nuclear issue is immeasurably bigger. Remember that you can’t destroy nuclear material, you can only take it somewhere else. Oh right, so where? Where indeed. Have we just given ourselves two new problems where we might have hoped to find some kind of answers? Absolutely we have, and that’s the nature of the issue we face.

A superb book in every other way.

Great book - Poor presentation on Kindle
By Popup
The contents merit at least four stars - maybe five. But unfortunately the Kindle formatting is very poor. The paper (and PDF) versions contain brilliantly coloured diagrams and schematics, but on the kindle the graphs are too small as well as being almost entirely indecipherable, thanks to all the colours being rendered into similar shades of grey. The footnotes are also messed up in the kindle presentations.

A comprehensive guide to material sustainability. With jokes.
By Steve Benner
Julian Allwood and Jonathan Cullen are both engineering academics at Cambridge University. Their latest book, "Sustainable Materials - without the Hot Air", written in conjunction with six other members of their research team (whose names didn't make it onto the outer cover for reasons of ink-saving, no doubt) is a revised and expanded version of their earlier (2011) book, "Sustainable Materials - with Both Eyes Open". Although underpinned by extensive and rigorous academic research conducted in association with a wide range of industrial partners from all sectors of manufacturing, the book is far from stuffy or indigestible in its approach. It is chock full of pretty pictures, colourful diagrams, amusing analogies and irritating puns that will either help you through the more complicated sections, or else send you up the wall for its seeming lightness. The substantive subject matter of the book is very far from light, however. (Incidentally, the book is also chock full of proof-reading errors and typographical mishaps, which is a great shame, because some of these render important sections hard to follow. Hopefully subsequent printings of the book will have these ironed out. No pun intended. Oh, all right, it was.)

In this book, the authors present a systematic and comprehensive review of the materials that mankind use with a view to answering the basic question of whether or not the world stands any chance of making the large scale reductions to climate changing emissions to which most nations are now committed. In essence, the books asks whether it is possible for us to create a sustainable future for material usage, not just from an availability point of view but also from an environmental one and if so, where our best chances for doing this might lie. They present this as a global issue, requiring global solutions, not just piecemeal, isolationist solutions, which are more likely just to move the problem around rather than to solve it. (As the authors are at pains to point out, it is meaningless for the aluminium industry, for instance, to claim that electrical power emissions are somehow separate from their own industrial emissions when 76% of the energy required to mine, process, refine, form and recycle aluminium goods is required by the aluminium industry in the form of electricity. Similarly, it is pointless a country reducing its emissions simply by shifting dirty operations abroad -- this does not help the global situation one little bit.)

The authors identify five materials as being the current main contributors to present day emissions in terms of their extraction, processing, utilisation and disposal -- aluminium, steel, concrete, plastic and paper. Thereafter, they concentrate attention on these as the areas in which the greatest reductions must be made, focusing in the first instance on practices within the steel and aluminium industries, as by far the best quantified and most monitored at present (and therefore with good reliable data readily available). The other three materials are each revisited towards the end of the book to see how far the possibilities identified for the metal industries could be applied to them.

The approach taken is to examine the full range of options along the entire production chain and life cycle of the items made from the materials under consideration. This basically means an exploration of

- the emissions savings to be had from improved extraction, processing, refining and recycling technologies;
- opportunities for creating less wasted material during manufacture of finished goods (90% of the aluminium purchased by the aircraft manufacturing industry, for example, never makes it into a finished aircraft but ends up as machined swarf in skips along the way);
- opportunities for making things from less material (most buildings have far more steel in them than they need owing to designers' tendency to over-specify building strengths; over-ordering of materials is routine on many construction projects simply because time delays arising from shortages are more costly than the waste from over-ordering etc)
- ways of extending lifetimes of goods in order to reduce demand for replacements (this not only reduces demand for new material, it saves on emissions associated with recovering and recycling materials from the old items)
- ways of reusing materials from discarded items, rather than recycling them (if old buildings were dismantled with care rather than demolished with a wrecking ball, for example, much of the steel work and even the bricks would remain perfectly serviceable for use in replacement buildings)
and (shock! horror!)
- opportunities for actually making do with less!

By assessing all of these options and quantifying the potential gains to be made in each case, the authors systematically identify the best areas for attention by manufacturers, politicians and consumers alike.

When the first edition of the book was published, in 2011, the authors were optimistic that the target of 50% reduction in emissions by 2050 was perfectly achievable if concerted efforts were made in appropriate quarters to adopt new methods of working or adapt current practices, bolstered by appropriate legislation and accompanied by programmes of awareness-raising and engagement of the public. In this new edition, they note that three and half years years down the line, however, almost no steps have been taken by anyone towards the goal to which governments are supposedly committed. Since this new edition was penned in early 2015, moreover, things have actually become worse in the UK, with the current government's wholesale abandoning of its former green energy objectives and an increasing tendency for us to buy dirtier goods from abroad because of the way the emissions beans are currently counted (we're somehow seen as cleaner by buying high emissions products from overseas than by making medium emissions products ourselves, because we only count the emissions that occur on our own soil, not those that we cause to occur in other lands!)

It is perhaps ironic that the exemplar product spotlighted in the book for longevity and therefore minimising demand for replacements to existing stock, the Landrover Defender -- where 85% of the number ever made are still in use, many with their original owners -- has just this very month gone out of production forever because the manufacturers are unable to refine the model sufficiently to meet the new tailpipe emissions standards for cars.

Oh well, I suppose that will provide the authors with another anecdote to include in the next edition.
