Beyond Psychology, by Otto Rank

Psychologist, psychoanalyst, sociologist, teacher, Otto Rank (1884–1939) wrote on such subjects as the artist, myth, the hero, sexuality, guilt, dreams, neurosis, and the technique and history of psychoanalysis. His ideas stimulated new lines of investigation not only in psychology but also in social science, religion, history, and anthropology. A pupil, colleague, and early follower of Freud (and later one of his chief dissenters), Rank settled in America in 1933 for a "sabbatical leave" devoted to therapy and teaching. Beyond Psychology was his first book in English, and it contains the results of a lifetime of thought and research about man's essential nature.
In Beyond Psychology Rank explores the ultimates of human existence — the fear of death, the desire for immortality, the nature of sexuality, the basis of personality, the nature of social organization, the need for love, the meaning of creativity. He notes the failure of rational ideologies to cope with the instability in our social order, the lack of generally accepted ideals, the hostility, fear, and guilt that seem to characterize our civilization. Rank seeks to understand the basic human problems not by a rejection of irrationality but by an acceptance of it as an inevitable fact of human existence.
After a detailed critique of rational psychologies, he examines the myth of The Double in legend and literature in order to investigate the development of the ideal of the Soul, and he traces the reflection of man's fear of final destruction in social organizations, ideologies, concepts of personality, sexual roles, and religion. Among the subjects investigated in this searching analysis are kingship and magic participation, the institution of marriage, power and the state, Messianism, the doctrine of rebirth, the two kinds of love (Agape and Eros), the creation of the sexual self, feminine psychology and masculine ideology, and psychology beyond the self.

Beyond Brilliant
By Herbert L Calhoun
Rank proves the truth of the thesis that a teacher has done his job when he becomes the student. This tour de force on Freudian psychological thought extends the bounds beyond anything that Freud, his teacher and mentor could have ever imagined himself.
Every sentence is lucid and compelling.
This book sparkles and speaks mostly to man's fears and irrationalities. But it does not try to exorcise or explan them away. For the first time a theory accepts them both as integral parts of the fabric of the human condition. The treatment of ideologies alone is worth the price of ten books, but there is more, a lot more: on creativity, social organization, human personality, etc. Ten stars!

Embracing the paradox ...
By Clement Wether
The odd thing with both Freud & Lacan is that, having promoted the notion of the unconscious in all its vicissitudes & unknowability, they then proceed to map & double-guess it. The result, in short, a 'rule-book' for the unconscious.

Rank makes no such mistake ... he prods & weaves, essays & intuits, but never reduces the vagueries to maps, schemas or graphs ... on the contrary, Rank discerns & celebrates the paradoxical character of the godworm.

He's not an easy read, but a necessary one.

Best for the Last?
By E James LIEBERMAN
Rank's last book, the only one he wrote in English, was published two years after his untimely death in 1939. As his biographer (Acts of Will: The Life and Work of Otto Rank), I paid it too little heed, as some informants interviewed 25 years ago felt that because the book was not quite finished, it might have been altered in the process of getting it published. I now doubt that. Like other reviewers I find it slow going but rich, deep, sensitive, and brilliant. It requires and deserves re-reading. Unfortunately Dover has let it go out of print, but it seems to be readily available used. Only 1,000 of the hardback were printed; the paperback appeared around 1958 (several different covers were used). Another important Rank book first became available in a full English translation in 1998: Psychology and the Soul: A Study of the Origin, Conceptual Evolution, and Nature of the Soul.

She was my obsession.
I was her destruction.

Beth:

My life is not my own. I belong to the family. Every step I make is dictated.
Until him. Skull.
The only man I’ve ever loved. The only man I will ever love.
His touch inflames me.
I can’t stay away—even if I should.
I gave him my body and my heart.
To keep him safe, I will sell my soul to the devil.
The lies began with our hello.
Now, I’m captured by them.

Skull:

There’s an animal in me that I keep hidden.
Beth calls to him. She tempts the monster and lures him to the surface.
I’m obsessed with her. I can’t stay away, even when doing so puts my entire club in danger.
Her blood is on my hands.
I formed her to fit only me.
I was her first and if I have to kill everyone in our way. So be it.
I will be her last.
She is mine.

Warning! Cliffhanger ahead. This book will end in a cliffhanger and continue in Torch's story (Burned) To be released March 4th and followed by the final book-- Conquered in April.

FIVE PULSE-POUNDING, PASSIONATE STARS! JORDAN MARIE'S BEST WORK YET!
By Danielle
*** THIS AN IN-DEPTH REVIEW THAT CONTAINS SPOILERS ***

“She’s a princess and I’m no one’s Prince Charming…”

After the death of her mother and stepfather, her two stepbrothers send twenty-year-old Beth, who is in remission following a prolonged illness, to a Catholic boarding school for girls to finish her high school education. The heads of a powerful, criminal empire, Colin and Matthew Donahue are violent, vicious men. Colin has made it clear to Beth that he intends to have much more than a sisterly relationship with her. Beth feels trapped – by Colin’s plans for her, by her illness and by her lack of life experiences. She starts sneaking out of school, and it is during one of those excursions that she meets Skull. Flattered by his attention and curious about the tattooed biker, she ultimately knows that nothing can come of it and that she probably should be running from him, but she can’t resist the pull to him and begins sneaking out to see him every day. Skull, the hardened and brutal president of the Devil's Blaze MC, knows she’s too young for him, he knows she’s inexperienced, but he doesn’t even try to fight his attraction to her. It isn’t long, though, before Colin’s henchmen catch on to her activities with the biker, and Colin’s warning to her is decisively and painfully clear: she is to stop seeing Skull and accept her place with him.

“I need to have faith in my man.”

Not wanting to succumb to a life as Colin’s wife, Beth instead plans to run. Before she disappears, though, she wants to spend a few days with Skull so she has those experiences and memories with him when she goes. Neither could foresee just how their attraction to and need for each other would become so all-consuming and urgent. Scorchingly hot, insatiable and almost obsessive in their need for each other, this relationship is a whirlwind of emotions that neither of them is accustomed to feeling. Unsurprisingly, Beth finds herself not only considering a life with Skull but also wanting it desperately. Her brothers now know where she is, though. In what she believes is a retaliation for her actions, an attack is carried out against the MC. It goes horribly wrong and is the catalyst that ignites a war between the MC and the Donahues. Beth knows well what her stepbrothers are capable of but she doesn’t really have any idea what Skull and the Devil’s Blaze MC can do.

“...she’s giving me a piece of her soul. I see it in her eyes, I hear it in her words, I feel it in the way she loves me.”

Passionately in love, Skull will do anything to protect his woman. He plots, plans and executes a successful counter-attack on the Donahues, and while Beth desperately wants to believe Skull and the MC will be victorious in this war, she just isn’t sure they can be. She is approached by a surprising source, and from that person, she learns the shocking truth about her true place within the Donahue family. As a result of that information, the deceptions begin to stack up as Beth’s fear and panic increase. She blames herself for the war between Skull and her stepbrothers and carries guilt for the losses the MC has sustained. She urgently wants to trust that Skull and his brothers will hold their own against the Donahues, but she’s struggling mightily with that because she is practically consumed by doubt, fear and panic. All of this pressure, all of the danger and death swirling around them coupled with Beth’s youth, inexperience and naivet combine and begin to overwhelm her just as she is presented with an impossible choice.

"Love me, Skull... Never let me go."
"Always, mi cielo."

Beth and Skull have found something in each other that neither has ever had before, and their relationship deepens quickly as avowals of love and pledges of forever are made between them. This is a love that they both would do anything to protect and to keep. But the clock on the impending war – and on Beth’s unimaginably difficult decision – is ticking now. She is keeping secrets from Skull, enormous secrets that she is nearly buckling under the weight of. When the clock ticks down and the time comes for her to render that awful decision, how will Beth choose? How will her choices affect the decisions that Skull has already made?

“Oh God, please don’t let this be real. …What have I done?”

I’ve been a fan of Jordan Marie’s since her debut novel, Breaking Dragon, was released. I have watched enthusiastically, with each of her successive releases, as this author has developed and honed her storytelling abilities. Jordan is gifted in terms of her ability to craft incredibly layered, multi-faceted stories. The attention this author pays to the details, the development of plots and building of worlds is nothing short of astonishing. This is not a book that is merely read, this is book intended to be experienced. This book definitely sets the stage for an incredible journey. It is very obviously a resounding success for this author. The promise of this series is evident on every page, and I am literally at the edge of my seat, very anxiously awaiting the next release.

To simply say that I adored this book is a vast understatement. This is a stunningly beautiful yet completely gut-wrenching love story, and it is unlike anything the exceptionally talented Jordan Marie has given her readers before. As heart breaking as it was heart pounding, this is a story that left me breathless and sobbing, and it is one will stay with me for a very long time. Richly developed, intricately plotted and fabulously well written, this is unquestionably Jordan Marie’s best work to date, and it is definitely a book that is likely to be considered one of the top books in MC romance genre.

Congratulations, Jordan Marie. You have given your fans something truly special in Captured. Well done, Jordan, very, very well done!

O.M.G !!!!! What an outstanding first book in this new series from Jordan Marie 5*+++++ from me.

Beth is a sweet innocent girl who is trapped in a family she hates. Skull makes her want to taste the forbidden fruit and wins her over but at what cost ?

This book delivers so much more than romance we get to see the real bonds between the MC Brothers, the fights, Blood, tears and the after effects of the actions taken by the MC. The original edition of this now classic work was hailed by Jacob Cohen in The Nation as "the finest one-volume interpretation of American history extant."

For this Third Edition of Out of Our Past, Carl Degler has added a comprehensive new chapter on the historical development of American families, brought up to date the discussion of U.S. foreign policy, greatly expanded sections dealing with the place and history of women in our past, and made numerous changes throughout the text in light of scholarship published since the appearance of the 1970 Revised Edition.

Review
"Carl Degler presents a skillful, discriminating distillation of the work of many experts in various fields . . . He possesses a gift, too rare among historical scholars, of lucid exposition and an excellent readable style." -- William Henry Chamberlin"The best single-volume interpretation of American history now extant. It is not a comprehensive ré sumé of our long history, but rather an account of the development of the issues, the conditions, and the values which concern us today."-- D. M. Potter, "Saturday Review""The author must be credited with a lively style, keen analytic powers, and a truly remarkable ability to synthesize current scholarship on a myriad of subjects."-- "Pennsylvania History"

This book was recommended by my grand daughter
By Suresh C. Mathur
This book was recommended by my grand daughter, who used it as a text book in her High School curriculum. I found this book to describe the thoughts of American people from seventeenth century up to the year 2006. This is an extremely well written historical account of all phases of the development of the American politics, industrialization, society, the emancipation of slaves, civil rights progress in the 1960s, depression and FDR years, the two world wars, the cold war and its resolution in the 1980s, the place of women in the society, andAmerica's emergence as a super power in the world. I would highly recommend this book to all history buffs.

Powerful History Book
By Elderbear
One of the main textbooks for my honors history class. Really took a different perspective than the other students got slogging through their "history lite" books. Degler made me stop and think, not just try to memorize facts. Not an easy read, but well worth the effort. I found myself discovering that my country didn't have the easily explained history I had been brought up with.
Don't just read this book, though, also get a copy of Howar Zinn's "A People's History of the United States: 1492-Present." Between these two books, you'll begin to form a deeper appreciation of American history--and perhaps find our present much more disturbing. I know I sure did!

Modern Cosmology, by Scott Dodelson

Modern Cosmology begins with an introduction to the smooth, homogeneous universe described by a Friedman-Robertson-Walker metric, including careful treatments of dark energy, big bang nucleosynthesis, recombination, and dark matter. From this starting point, the reader is introduced to perturbations about an FRW universe: their evolution with the Einstein-Boltzmann equations, their generation by primordial inflation, and their observational consequences. These consequences include the anisotropy spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) featuring acoustic peaks and polarization, the matter power spectrum with baryonic wiggles, and their detection via photometric galaxy surveys, redshift distortions, cluster abundances, and weak lensing. The book concludes with a long chapter on data analysis.

Modern Cosmology is the first book to explain in detail the structure of the acoustic peaks in the CMB, the E/B decomposition in polarization which may allow for detection of primordial gravity waves, and the modern analysis techniques used on increasingly large cosmological data sets. Readers will gain the tools needed to work in cosmology and learn how modern observations are rapidly revolutionizing our picture of the universe.

Review
"...I like the choice of topics and detailed derivations of some of the basic processes which cannot be found in any other textbook and which really make this book a textbook out of which one can actually learn something. Examples include detailed derivation of inflationary spectrum, Boltzmann equation etc. ... I also like the extensive list of problems at the end of each chapter. This is a great textbook that is long overdue given the importance of the subject..."
- Uros Seljak, Princeton University

"This book is very up to date and gives excellent treatments of structure formation...This provides what is the most complete such description in an textbook."
― Paul H. Frampton, Universtiy of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, CERN COURIER (Oct 2003)

"(In) Dodelson's Modern Cosmology we have recently obtained an appropriate textbook for the dawn of this new epoch...In a sense, this book is postmodern cosmology (with an affirmative connotation!), in being the first to consider the new wave of challenges for this oldest scientific philosophical pursuit...it provides an excellent introduction to some of the most dynamical areas in physics and astronomy, very likely to remain attractive for at least a couple of decades."
― Milan M. Cirkovic, Astronomical Obervatory of Belgrade, FOUNDATIONS OF PHYSICS (Oct 2003)

"Dodelson writes well and the mathematical derivations are generally well laid out and easy to follow. Useful sets of exercises appear at the end of each chapter, along with suggestions for further reading, often with amusing commentaries. New graduate students, Dodelson's intended audience should find it easy to learn from this book."
-George Efstathiou, University of Cambride, England (July 2004)

The best book on graduate cosmology.
By Andrew J. S. Hamilton
I am currently teaching graduate cosmology. Modern cosmology is an extraordinarily beautiful piece of physics that has allowed cosmologists to learn from observations fundamental facts about our universe. Graduate students want to understand this beautiful subject themselves. Dodelson's book is the one that delivers that understanding. Of the several graduate cosmology texts out there, this one is unquestionably the best.

The book is uncompromisingly a graduate level text. The material is intrinsically hard, but Dodelson does a remarkable job of taking the reader through it. The problem sets at the end of each chapter (some with solutions) are well thought out, and fill in many gaps. Each chapter concludes with a thoughtful summary and a guide to further reading. If you are going to teach a graduate level cosmology class with this book, then you should impress on your students that the text is not easy, but it's the real unwatered-down thing.

Approachable Cosmology
By f. j. busch
This book is a must-have for the cosmos-curious. Well organized and indexed and excellently written, the author puts difficult information within reach of the student who aspires to understand one of the most complex disciplines. A superb accomplishment by a fine teacher and consummate scientist that should become the definitive text for all would-be cosmologists.

Impressive even at a first look
By A Customer
I stumbled across the title of this book when I was browsing around somebody's cosmology course website. I know that Scott Dodelson is a quite well-known cosmologist, so I start searching for more information. After reading the preliminary detailed table of contents (I found it somewhere on the web) and the book description from Academic Press, I decided to pre-order the book. The book arrived just on March 31. I tried to take a quick but thorough view before write this comment. I haven't read the book in full. Here i would just like to write the Table of Contents in more detail by including the sections.
1. The Standard Model and Beyond. The expanding universe, Hubble diagram, Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), beyond Standard Model.
2. The Smooth, Expanding Universe. General relativity (crash course), distances, evolution of energy, cosmic inventory (photons, baryons, matter, neutrinos, dark energy, epoch of matter-radiation equality).
3. Beyond Equilibrium. Boltzmann equation for annihilation, BBN (neutron & light elements abudance), recombination, dark matter.
4. The Boltzmann Equations (BE). BE for harmonic oscillator, the collisionless BE for photons (0th and 1st order), collision terms: Compton scattering, BE for photons, BE for Cold Dark Matter (CDM), BE for baryons.
5. Einstein Equations. Perturbed Ricci tensor and scalar, two components of Einstein Equations, tensor perturbations, decomposition theorems, gauges.
6. Initial conditions. Einstein-Boltzmann equations at early times, the horizon, inflation, gravity wave production, scalar perturbations.
7. Inhomogeneities. Prelude, large scales (super-horizon & through horizon crossing), small scales (horizon & sub-horizon crossing), growth function, beyond CDM.
8. Anisotropies. Overview, large-scale anisotropies, acoustic oscillations (tightly coupled), diffusion (Silk) damping, inhomogeneities to anisotropies (free streaming, C_{l}s), anisotropy spectrum (Sachs-Wolfe, small scales), cosmological parameters.
9. Probe of Inhomogeneities. Angular correlation, peculiar velocities, redshift space distortions, galaxy clusters.
10. Weak Lensing and Polarization. Gravitational distortion, geodesics and shears, ellipticity, weak lensing power spectrum, polarization, quadrupole and Q/U (or E/B as in recent literatures) decomposition, polarization power spectra, detection of gravity waves.
11. Analysis. Likelihood function, signal covariance matrix, Karhunen-Loeve & optimal quadratic, Fisher matrix, mapmaking & inversion, systematics, foregrounds.
Appendix A. Solution to Selected Problems
Appendix B. Numbers
Appendix C. Special Functions
Appendix D. Symbols.
Bibliography.
In addition, each chapter is ended with a summary and further reading list. Quite nice indeed. The bibliography are extensive: there are classic, pioneering papers, recent papers, textbooks. There are some color plates in the middle part of the book.
In my opinion, this book is far better than Peacock in discussing new aspect of anisotropies and inhomogeneities. Lots of topics that were only previously available in research papers, review articles, summer school lectures, preprints, are brought together to the form of a decent book. The chapter of analysis is quite interesting, since the subject has become very demanding but there are still no single treatment of it.
Dodelson said in the preface that the expected audience are advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students. Some of the necessary materials (GR, inflation, are introduced in the text).
I myself suggests, however, that the reader should have a proficient knowledge in standard undergraduate physics (mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, quantum physics), mathematical physics, and general relativity if possible. Some knowledge of astrophysics/astronomy, statistics/data analysis, kinetic theory, would certainly be welcomed.
A little bit of cons, however are inevitable. The current development in cosmology is astounding. Just a few weeks before the book was published, the WMAP team released their first result after a year of observations, which put tight constraints for cosmological models. Several numbers and figures in the book then are in the need to be updated. Topics such as distant quasars, cosmic reionization and the end of cosmic dark ages, first-generation stars, might be worthy enough to be included in the future.
This book is definitely a must buy for cosmologist.

1) Kinetic theory in the expanding universe by Jeremy Bernstein, Cambridge, 1988, ISBN 0-521-36050-1. Best reference material to understand relativistic Boltzmann equation in Dodelson chapter 3-5.
2) The Early Universe by Edward W. Kolb and Michael S. Turner, Perseus/Westview, 1994, ISBN 0-201-62674-8. Contains extensive material on FRW metric, detailed discussion on nucleosynthesis and particle physics-cosmology interface, inflation, and structure formation.

Imagine, at a terrifyingly aggressive rate, everything you regularly use is being equipped with computer technology. Think about your phone, cameras, cars-everything-being automated and programmed by people who in their rush to accept the many benefits of the silicon chip, have abdicated their responsibility to make these products easy to use. The Inmates Are Running the Asylum argues that the business executives who make the decisions to develop these products are not the ones in control of the technology used to create them. Insightful and entertaining, The Inmates Are Running the Asylum uses the author's experiences in corporate America to illustrate how talented people continuously design bad software-based products and why we need technology to work the way average people think. Somewhere out there is a happy medium that makes these types of products both user and bottom-line friendly; this book discusses why we need to quickly find that medium.

Amazon.com Review
The recurring metaphor in The Inmates are Running the Asylum is that of the dancing bear--the circus bear that shuffles clumsily for the amusement of the audience. Such bears, says author Alan Cooper, don't dance well, as everyone at the circus can see. What amazes the crowd is that the bear dances at all. Cooper argues that technology (videocassette recorders, car alarms, most software applications for personal computers) consists largely of dancing bears--pieces that work, but not at all well. He goes on to say that this is more often than not the fault of poorly designed user interfaces, and he makes a good argument that way too many devices (perhaps as a result of the designers' subconscious wish to bully the people who tormented them as children) ask too much of their users. Too many systems (like the famous unprogrammable VCR) make their users feel stupid when they can't get the job done.

Cooper, who designed Visual Basic (the programming environment Microsoft promotes for the purpose of creating good user interfaces), indulges in too much name-dropping and self-congratulation (Cooper attributes the quote, "How did you do that?" to Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, upon looking at one of Cooper's creations)--but this appears to be de rigueur in books about the software industry. But those asides are minor. More valuable is the discourse about software design and implementation ("[O]bject orientation divides the 1000-brick tower into 10 100-brick towers."). Read this book for an idea of what's wrong with UI design. --David Wall

Topics covered: User interfaces--good ones and bad ones--and where they come from. Also, how to improve the ones you create.

About the Author

As a software inventor in the mid-70s, Alan Cooper got it into his head that there must be a better approach to software construction. This new approach would free users from annoying, difficult and inappropriate software behavior by applying a design and engineering process that focuses on the user first and silicon second. Using this process, engineering teams could build better products faster by doing it right the first time.

His determination paid off. In 1990 he founded Cooper, a technology product design firm. Today, Cooper's innovative approach to software design is recognized as an industry standard. Over a decade after Cooper opened its doors for business, the San Francisco firm has provided innovative, user-focused solutions for companies such as Abbott Laboratories, Align Technologies, Discover Financial Services, Dolby, Ericsson, Fujitsu, Fujitsu Softek, Hewlett Packard, Informatica, IBM, Logitech, Merck-Medco, Microsoft, Overture, SAP, SHS Healthcare, Sony, Sun Microsystems, the Toro Company, Varian and VISA. The Cooper team offers training courses for the Goal-Directed interaction design tools they have invented and perfected over the years, including the revolutionary technique for modeling and simulating users called personas, first introduced to the public in 1999 via the first edition of The Inmates.

In 1994, Bill Gates presented Alan with a Windows Pioneer Award for his invention of the visual programming concept behind Visual Basic, and in 1998 Alan received the prestigious Software Visionary Award from the Software Developer's Forum. Alan introduced a taxonomy for software design in 1995 with his best-selling first book, About Face: The Essentials of User Interface Design. Alan and co-author Robert Reimann published a significantly revised edition, About Face: The Essentials of Interaction Design, in 2003.

Alan's wife, Susan Cooper, is President and CEO of Cooper. They have two teenage sons, Scott and Marty, neither of whom is a nerd. In addition to software design, Alan is passionate about general aviation, urban planning, architecture, motor scooters, cooking, model trains and disc golf, among other things. Useful ideas but infuriatingly arrogant
By Ellen Isaacs
The Inmates are Running the Asylum makes the business case for interaction designers playing a central role in the development of technology products. It starts by providing examples of technology that is difficult, frustrating, humiliating, and even dangerous to use. Cooper argues that, although people have gotten used to being humiliated by technology, it doesn't have to be this way. His claim is that most technology, especially software, is designed by engineers who think differently than non-technical people: they enjoy being challenged by difficult problems and they are trained to think in terms of "edge cases" rather than on the common case. Thus when engineers design software, they tend to create products with far too many neat features that clutter the interface and make it difficult to do the simpler tasks. In the second part of the book, Cooper describes an approach that he and his design firm uses to simplify products and keep them focused on the users' needs, eliminating or hiding more complex features that few people use. He gives some specific and compelling examples of how they took a different approach to an interesting design problem and keep the product simple while still being powerful. He makes the case that you can grab a market with powerful, feature-rich, complex software that is frustrating to use, but you don't build customer loyalty that way; as soon as a well-designed version of that product comes along, your customers will defect. If you delight the user with your products, on the other hand, you will engender deep loyalty that will help see you through some poor business decisions. His primary example of this is the fanatical loyalty that Apple garners from its users, compared with the rage that Windows users feel toward Microsoft. Apple has weathered some horrendous business decisions and still survives, whereas Microsoft users are more than happy to defect when a better product comes along, and in fact revel in the defection.
I also don't think he makes it clear enough that he's not proposing doing *fewer* features to make products simpler and easier to use, he's talking about doing *different* features. For example, he argues that software should not be so lazy; it should stop making the user do work that the computer is better suited to doing (e.g. remembering where they put files), and it should stop making users go through the same steps over and over again, as if it were the first time they had ever met this user. He argues that "Do you really mean it?" popups are evil (and I couldn't agree more - as most of my coworkers know), and instead it should be easy to undo anything, so it's not so catastrophic to do something you didn't meant to do. I agree with all that, but of course building a reasonable "undo" mechanism is a very complex feature. To cure the "How could you possibly want to quit my ever-so-important application?" popup syndrome, it would be much better to make the software very fast to start up, and to have it come back in exactly the state you left it in, so that quitting when you didn't mean to is not a problem. All of this is well worth doing, but it is lots of engineering work; it's another feature. I'm all for shifting engineer resources to these features instead of the "but somebody *might* want to do this obscure thing" features, but it should be clear that this is not doing fewer features, it's doing different ones, ones that help smooth the user's interaction with the software. Cooper seems to imply that engineers are so lazy that they don't want to do these features, but most engineers work very hard and care about their product. The key is to make it clear why doing this feature right will make such a big difference to the product. My experience has been that the more you understand the work involved in doing a feature, the better you can work with engineers. Not only can you better trade off engineering effort for user benefit, but engineers respect you for understanding what you're asking.
Having said all that, I can't deny that I finished this book with some very specific ideas about improving my own designs, and a renewed sense of the importance of what I do. I just wish Cooper could have articulated the case without putting interaction designers "on a throne."

Great Ideas, Not Always Well Presented
By Brian Curtis
The culture of software development is changing, but grudgingly. The short-sighted notion "It's better to be first with something bad than second with something perfect" has been discredited after too long a reign as the New Paradigm of the Information Age ("It's brilliant because it's counter-intuitive!"), and instead has been exposed for what it is: bad business and a lousy way to treat customers. Alan Cooper's book helps make sense of things as software developers, after decades of coding for each other, are forced to begin acknowledging the cold and strange outside world of Real Life Users.
Cooper's writing is generally clear and easy to follow. He documents his points well and uses numerous true-to-life examples to illustrate the concepts. The ATM analysis, for example, is both effective and memorabl: Why DOES the ATM list account types you don't have, permitting an invalid selection? Why can't you return to a previous screen to correct mistakes, instead of starting over from scratch? Why doesn't the system give you an error message that helps you understand the problem, rather than "Unable to complete transaction"? No one even bothers to ask these questions, Cooper points out, because we've accepted the default structure of ATM screens--which were created for the convenience of coders and system engineers, rather than users.
Cooper also performs a valuable service in demolishing that old standby programmers' excuse: "We don't call any of the shots-it's all management's fault!" Bull. Half the managers in the computer industry are former coders themselves (and laboring under an outmoded and faulty mental model of how software development must occur, by the way). The other half are so non-technical that they're at the mercy of the coders, who are free to decide which features are most important, which will take too long, and ultimately, which will or won't make the cut for the next release. Coders ARE driving this bus, if occasionally from the back seat, and they need to take responsibility for what they produce-and be humble enough to admit that an indispensable part of the development process (interface/interaction design) is beyond their abilities.
That said, Cooper's writing style itself is less than perfect. He presents many compelling case histories, but at times he seems to lean too heavily on insider stories, as if showing off his contacts and expertise in the industry. And, of course, Cooper is far too much in love with his "dancing bear" metaphor; long before you've reached the halfway point, you'll be muttering, "One page...just ONE page without a `dancing bearware' reference, PLEASE! That's all I ask!"
But the messages and lessons in this book are too important to ignore. As Cooper tries to remind us, it is everyday users-not the power users, not even the "computer literate"-who are the core audience. They're the ones you have to design for: a successful interaction design, rather than a burgeoning list of clever features, is what will determine your product's success or failure.

Extremely poor
By E. PEPKE
I have been passionately interested in usability issues and ways to improve them for a quarter century. I read all that I can on the subject to gain insight into how to make things better. This book, however, fails miserably.
It is about 50% personal exorcism, projected onto others, of his own former self. It is about 50% advertisement for the kind of consultant he now stylizes himself as. It is 100% the kind of book on usability you would expect the "Father of Visual Basic" to produce.
There is some good information in this book, which would normally merit a rating of two or three stars. However, by its polemical tone, it diverts attention away from really good books by such authors as Donald Norman and Jef Raskin, and, for that matter, Cooper's own _About Face_, which is quite good.
If you hate unusable products and are looking for nice, easy scapegoats to be angry about, this will be an enjoyable read. If, however, you are interested in the actual reasons that products are poorly usable or are interested in how to improve the world, this book is worse than useless.
One histrionic account describes how he cannot buy a VCR that lets him record shows by setting time with a knob. This would be excusable except for the fact that, the year this book was published, a remote control was being sold that did exactly that, and it recieved saturation advertising on television. The problem is that nobody bought it. Demand was so poor that it isn't made any more, and no sales staff I have spoken with has remembered anyone ever asking for such a device.
Yes, there are reasons that devices are not very usable, but in order to understand them one has to look beyond the simple, adversarial, supply-side approach that Cooper and the majority of usability gurus seem to be stuck in. Unfortunately, the field has become so dominated by this kind of ressentiment thinking, that it is unlikely that the real issues can even be published, let alone addressed.
Failing that, however, there are still books that can inspire or help build a more usable world. _Asylum_ is simply not one of them, that's all.

Why Business People Speak Like Idiots: A Bullfighter's Guide, by Brian Fugere, Chelsea Hardaway, Jon Warshawsky

Ole!
If you think you smell something at work, there's probably good reason--"bull" has become the official language of business. Every day, we get bombarded by an endless stream of filtered, antiseptic, jargon-filled corporate speak, all of which makes it harder to get heard, harder to be authentic, and definitely harder to have fun.
But it doesn't have to be that way. The team that brought you the Clio Award-winning Bullfighter software is back with an entertaining, bare-knuckled guide to talking straight--for those who want to climb the corporate ladder, but refuse to check their personality at the door.
Why Business People Speak Like Idiots exposes four traps that transform us from funny, honest and engaging weekend people into boring business stiffs:
• The Obscurity Trap: "After extensive analysis of the economic factors facing our industry, we have concluded that a restructuring is essential to maintaining competitive position. A task force has been assembled..." These are the empty calories of business communication. And, unfortunately, they're the rule. The Obscurity Trap catches idiots desperate to sound smart or prove their purpose, and lures them with message-killers like jargon, long-windedness, acronyms, and evasiveness.
• The Anonymity Trap: Businesses love clones--easy to hire, easy to manage, easy to train, easy to replace--and almost everyone is all too happy to oblige. We outsource our voice through templates, speechwriters and email, and cave in to conventions that aren't really even rules.
• The Hard-Sell Trap: Legions of business people fall prey to the Hard-Sell Trap. We overpromise. We accentuate the positive and pretend the negative doesn't exist. This may work for those pushing Ginsu knives and miracle Abdominizers, but it's dead wrong for persuading business people to listen.
• The Tedium Trap: Everyone you work with thinks about sex, tells stories, gets caught up in life's amazing details, and judges everyone else by the way they look and act. We live to be entertained. We all learned that in Psychology 101, except for the business idiots who must have skipped that semester. They tattoo their long executive-sounding titles on their foreheads, dump pre-packaged numbers on their audience, and virtually guarantee that we want nothing to do with them.
This is your wake-up call. Personality, humanity and candor are being sucked out of the workplace. Let the wonks send their empty messages. Yours are going to connect.
Fast Company magazine named Why Business People Speak Like Idiots one of the ideas and trends that will change how we work and live in 2005.
So grab your cape and sharpen your sword. It's time to fight the bull!

From Publishers Weekly
Dull, verbose, evasive language that disguises empty-headed clichés with jargon-drenched hype is pilloried in this diverting indictment of everyday business-speak. The authors are consultants, and their familiarity with the subject, enhanced through their side job peddling "Bullfighter" anti-jargon software, gives their irreverent critique a funny, knowing edge. Besides ridiculing some ripe samples of corporate pseudo-communication, they offer advice on the art of "persuasion" in every genre, from the humble e-mail to the shareholders' address, and throw in tips on public speaking, dress and deportment. Much of their advice-keep things concrete and specific, talk about what your audience is interested in-is fine, but some suggestions, like spicing up corporate presentations with ethnic humor, sexual innuendo and mild profanity, are certain to backfire. The authors also open themselves to their own critique. They throw around buzzwords like "authenticity," vapid clichés like "being you is all you'll ever need" and meaningless hype like "one-quarter of the gross domestic product is linked to persuasion." One of their recommendations for making presentations "spontaneous" and "personal" is to download anecdotes from an anecdote Web site. An injunction to brevity is translated into a mindless bean-counting formula proscribing sentences longer than 21 words (a figure derived from the "Flesch Reading Ease Scale"). And while they complain that "technology...makes it too convenient to automate the one part of business that should never be outsourced: our voice," their signature remedy for turgid, jargon-riddled prose is to run it through their anti-jargon computer program. The authors deliver a scintillating diagnosis of the problems in business communications, but sometimes their cure for the disease is the disease. Photos.

From Booklist
"Let's face it. Business today is drowning in bullshit," say the authors of this timely, highly entertaining guide to cutting through corporatespeak and communicating effectively. Fugere and his coauthors, Chelsea Hardaway and Jon Warshawsky, are all veterans of the consulting giant Deloitte, and they speak with a jaded insider's view of "hype-filled, self-aggrandizing product literature" and "elephantine" reports that "shed less than two watts of light on the big issues." The concise chapters focus on common communication traps of business executives, including the tendency to write obscure, colorless, template information rather than clear material that speaks directly to its audience. Throughout, excerpts of egregious corporatespeak offer amusing, cautionary examples, and an appended glossary includes more offending phrases, along with deliciously sardonic definitions. Best of all, the authors suggest plenty of practical ways to break the bad habits. In an era in which phrases such as "going-forward value proposition" are supposed to mean something, this is a crucial guide, filled with "value-added deliverables" for readers in all professions who yearn for basic, substantive communication. Review
"This is a funny, entertaining, readable book about a serious, important, undervalued issue: communication. The way business people talk to each other -- and to the rest of us -- is often inauthentic, deceptive, opaque, and trivial. If you're us, this book will help you decode what they're talking about. If you're them, it will help you find a better, more effective way to get your message across."
-- Tony Schwartz, bestselling coauthor of The Power of Full Engagement and president of The Energy Project

"Why Business People Speak Like Idiots...is one of the surprising ideas and trends that will change the way we work and live in 2005."
-- Fast Company

"There are two reasons why business people refuse to speak in a way the rest of us can understand: fear and peer pressure. This book cuts through both excuses and makes it far more likely that work will actually get done. If you've ever written a memo, you need this book."
-- Seth Godin, bestselling author of Permission Marketing and Purple Cow

"Why Business People Speak Like Idiots follows its own advice. It's blunt, lively and chocablock with personality."
The Wall Street Journal, March 1, 2005

Fantastic

Some books become less relevant with time. This isn't one of them. In fact, it's more relevant now than when it was written. The "Bullspotter's Guide" (a.k.a., glossary) alone makes this book worth ten times its price. It should be required reading in every college communication program.

Hold that Jargon
By Roberto Blatt
"Hold that jargon!". Monty Phyton couldn't have done better in destroying all that jargon we so much hate. "Downsizing", "reengineering", "aligning", "holistic", all these words get a paradigm shift (oops, sorry!); the authors have pushed the envelope (sorry again) in depicting the four capital traps in the language of business: obscurity, anonymity, hard-sell and the tedium trap. They do that with humor, as when they offer us a "Special Bonus Feature", the Stupid Generic Photograph (SGP), which, as they put it, "add mass without content at no additional cost" to PowerPoint presentations. They really know how to make us think outside the box (oh, no, not again!) and show us the thoughtware (that's enough!) we can get from people who show their humanity, like Warren Buffett and his plain English speeches when admitting his mistakes or from people like Virgin's Richard Branson, who "readily admits to his dyslexia and is generally ill at ease when interviewed in public". At the start, the book sounded repetitive, but, a few pages later, it started to sound very funny and instructive. A must read!

A good read with some practical ideas
By michael anderson
If you are looking to get some ideas on commnication this is a good book. I enjoyed the no-nonsense apprach and the notion that communcation should be done with honesty and not fluff. There were a few analogies that were used that I suspect as a woman they would have offended. Overall, it was good information and worth the money

From the Back Cover

More than an anthology, Momentos cumbres de las literaturas hispanicas offers a new method of teaching literary analysis. Abundant analytical steps (pasos) help students connect with the reading and more fully comprehend the material. Structured around moments of extraordinary literary achievement, Momentos cumbres provides examples from both Spain and Latin America for each literary modality. Some literary history and biographical information are provided in the text and expanded more fully in the accompanying Web site.

Highlights
  • Spanish and Spanish-American writers are presented in the same chapter, enabling students to see the cultural links between writers from both sides of the Hispanic world.
  • An emphasis on literary interpretations gives students guidelines to understand the works presented.
  • Carefully thought-out "pasos" accompany each text in the anthology and introduce students to the techniques of literary analysis. The first set of pasos is designed to help students understand the literal meaning of the text; the second set assists students in decoding the subtext of the reading.
  • This two-prong, post-reading pedagogical structure allows instructors to assign the first "pasos" for homework and focus on the second for classroom discussion.
  • Expanded canon includes a section devoted to the feminine voice in Spanish literature and provides students with more balanced coverage.
  • One comprehensive volume provides students with a cost-effective text, as they need only one book for both Spanish and Spanish-American survey courses.

Structure and features

Momentos cumbres de las literaturas hispanicas provides students and their instructors with one, handy collection of Spanish and Spanish-American texts aimed at teaching literary analysis as well as the main periods of Hispanic literary production. Its main focus, however, is to introduce students to the techniques of literary analysis. It guides students systematically through each work, first with pre-reading activities (Antes de leer) which pose issues related to the text but that also connect to the student's realm of experiences. In this way, the reader has a notion of the text's primary concerns. The next section—Codigos para la comprension—provides students with the specialized knowledge (historical, cultural, linguistic, and so forth) needed to understand the meaning of the text. The text itself is analyzed through a two-pronged process: first, by means of a series of Pasos para la compresion aimed at understanding the salient features of the text and later through Pasos para una lectura mas a fondo, which seek to decode the subtext and get beyond the literal meaning. Whenever possible, both sets of pasos focus on the literary text as a cultural construct so that the selection can be used as a vehicle for discussing and understanding aspects of Hispanic history, society, values, and culture.

The two-tiered structure of the pasos provides flexibility. Instructors may wish to deal only with the first set of pasos, especially if their objective is reading comprehension. Or, the first tier may be assigned for preparation outside of class while the second, more sophisticated set of literary considerations, can be used for classroom discussion. It should be noted that the pasos are not merely a set of objective questions related to the plot and themes of the work. They often reveal information or make suggestions that provide students with clues for unraveling the hidden messages of the works. The pasos are not always solved with a clear-cut response; they are aimed at opening up the multiple possibilities of the text, so that no single interpretation is sought.

Several features of the text support its emphasis on training students in literary analysis. First, a preliminary chapter (Bases teoricas) explains in simple language and with concrete examples the concepts of the modern literary theory that will be used throughout the book. And secondly, the Diccionario de terminos literarios, located in the appendix, serves as a useful reference tool. It not only defines terms, but frequently provides a concrete example from one of the texts in the anthology. The appendix also contains a section on Metrica espanola which explains in simple language the rules of Spanish prosody.

Momentos cumbres, as the title suggests, is centered on moments of extraordinary or significant literary production. Consequently, the texts in each unit are selected to provide a broad range of artistic expression within each literary period or modality No attempt has been made to reveal the range of styles or expression of any single author. Lope deVega, for instance, appears as a Renaissance poet and not as a Golden Age dramatist. The accompanying web site (see below) leads students to additional works by authors.

While most of the authors included in the anthology form part of the Hispanic literary canon, there has been an attempt to include previously silenced voices. This is the case with the medieval Jewish discourse of Sem Tob, and voice of the defeated Incans of Felipe Guaman Portia de Ayala, and the expression of feminine issues during the Spanish Golden Age with the work of Maria de Zayas. In a similar fashion, the term "Hispanic" has been interpreted in its broadest sense to include a great medieval Catalan poet (Ausias March), an example of gallego portugues poetry (the Cantigas of Alfonso X), and a poem in Galician by Rosalia de Castro—all of them with Castilian translations alongside the original text.

Companion Website www.prenhall.com/momentos and CD

A brief introduction precedes each chapter and author, but this brevity is augmented by the accompanying user-friendly Website designed specifically for Momentos cumbres with abundant relevant information on literary movements, historical background, life and works of authors, additional readings, and, where available, articles and other materials pertaining to the works in the anthology. The Website is an integral part of the Cumbres program. For instance, it contains an introductory essay, often by great essayists like Ortega y Gasset, to each chapter of the book. Equally significant are the links to essential reference tools, such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, maps, and the like. Much care has gone into the Website so that only outstanding, trustworthy material is included, and each link is succinctly described. The Website will bring literature alive for students, and show them how the Internet can be a powerful tool for literary study, especially when library resources are unavailable.

Audio CDs containing many of the poetic selections are also available with Momentos cumbres. Since poetry is a difficult genre for contemporary students, a professional reading of the poems, with their proper intonation, will help students understand their meaning and appreciate their audio and phonic qualities.

Intended audience

Momentos cumbres can be used in the third or fourth year of college-level Spanish study, in either an introductory literature course or a survey course of Spanish and/or Spanish-American literature. If the text is used to study only Spanish Literature or Spanish-American Literature, it has the advantage of letting students see what works were produced in the other part of the Spanish-speaking world within that same modality or time period, thus emphasizing the links that bond Spain to Spanish America. For instance, a student of Spanish literature studying the Baroque can see its ramifications in Mexico and Peru in the works of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz and Juan de Valle y Caviedes. On the other hand, a student studying Spanish-American literature and reading examples of Modernismo can see how the early Juan Ramon Jimenez in Spain was influenced by the movement. Because of this feature, Momentos cumbres is an ideal text for classes designed for native or heritage speakers of Spanish.

In addition, Momentos cumbres includes the works on the AP Spanish Literature reading list and is organized in a chronological, period structure, as this material is generally presented in college. The AP list does not always provide a full range of examples for certain literary units. For instance, of the rich and varied production of documentary literature related to the encounter between Europeans and indigenous peoples of the Western Hemisphere, only Cabeza de Vaca is represented. In Momentos cumbres, AP students will be able to see other examples like Las Casas, Diaz del Castillo, and El Inca Garcilaso, thus realizing that Cabeza de Vaca is not a single voice but rather part of a much larger chorus of Spaniards expressing their experiences in the newly discovered territories.

Theories underlying Momentos cumbres

As with any book, I have a philosophy about teaching literature that has guided my work. First of all, I hesitate to use translations of words and phrases. If the nature of literary language is to exploit the power of words beyond their literal meaning—as I believe it is—then such translations are counterproductive to the literary experience. Therefore, I have annotated obscure or regional words and expressions in Spanish, making sure to indicate if its meaning is figurative or if it is used in only a particular region of the Spanish-speaking world. I also ask students throughout the book to look up certain words in a Spanish language dictionary, especially when these are polysemic words and its multiple meanings and connotations are appropriate for understanding the text. The Codigos para la comprension avoids the need of extensive footnoting, since they explain beforehand the specialized codes necessary for understanding the work.

Secondly I want to train students to handle contemporary modes of critical analysis, particularly the concept of signs and codes (semiotics) and how they are structured in a text (structuralism). I also want them to learn critical theory. Although I do not subscribe to any particular method or school, I have suggested a number of different approaches, especially in the Pasos para una lectura mas a fondo, so that a student can see what Marxist or Feminist critics do, what deconstruction is, how Reader Response or Reception Theory operate, and so forth.

Lastly I have tried to avoid "fragments" of works, preferring to read complete, albeit short, works that represent an organic whole. However sometimes, fragments are unavoidable. A great writer like Benito Perez Galdos, for instance, did not write short stories, so I was forced to include a chapter of Fortunata y Jacinta that holds together organically. On the whole, selections are purposely short so reading assignments are manageable and students have more time to read in greater depth. Similarly, introductory material to periods and authors is very concise and free of lists of titles and dates. The emphasis is on a close reading of the text.

Get 5 on the AP Spanish Literature
By Marlene De La Cruz
I love this book! I had the great opportunity to use it in my Senior year in high school. My experience could be summarized by saying that thanks to this book and the incredible teacher i had, and also the love for spanish literature of my own, I was able to get a 5 on the spanish literature exam. Most, if not all, of the readings and questions in the exam were asked in the test. This book really prepared me for that exam which gave me 12 credit hours in college; 6 credit hours for the 5 in spanish language, and 6 credit hours for the 5 in the spanish literature.

Spanish literature
By Madeleine
This book makes teaching a breeze. It takes away the boring technicalities of ordinary literature theory and allows the student to enjoy sophisticated literature as if it were a walk in the park. What I mean is that, rather than having to learn difficult terms and literary concepts, it uses the best examples of each period to showcase the culture and the society of Spain during its history.

As Introductions to Literature go, this one is quite thorough. It gives you an authoritative overview of the history, the society and mentality of the era, which enables you to understand and justify the presence of certain topics, images and lexicon, that form the characteristics of each period in literature.

It is important to accompany this book with the CD. Being able to listen to professional readers in class can do so much more to your lesson plan.

Nothing special
By T. King
While there are many introductions to Spanish literature, I would not rate this among the best. Also, it's pricey.
