Generative Design: Visualize, Program, and Create with Processing, by Hartmut Bohnacker, Benedikt Gross, Julia Laub

Generative design is a revolutionary new method of creating artwork, models, and animations from sets of rules, or algorithms. By using accessible programming languages such as Processing, artists and designers are producing extravagant, crystalline structures that can form the basis of anything from patterned textiles and typography to lighting, scientific diagrams, sculptures, films, and even fantastical buildings. Opening with a gallery of thirty-five illustrated case studies, Generative Design takes users through specific, practical instructions on how to create their own visual experiments by combining simple-to-use programming codes with basic design principles. A detailed handbook of advanced strategies provides visual artists with all the tools to achieve proficiency. Both a how-to manual and a showcase for recent work in this exciting new field, Generative Design is the definitive study and reference book that designers have been waiting for.

Review
"Beautifully illustrated... A fine introduction to generative design, filled with impressive examples and thankfully free of mind- numbing jargon... This book, equal parts art and textbook, is a valuable tool for both learning what exists and triggering new ideas." -- Steven Heller, The New York Times

"Fortunately, this insiders' how-to manual--by Hartmut Bohnacker, Benedikt Gro, and Julia Laub--contains loads of images and project profiles that together form a snapshot of the emerging field, which, in layman's terms, uses computer software and algorithms to generate visually exciting forms based on wildly complex concepts. The examples are rich and varied, ranging from a series that visualizes the air quality in various cities through virtual plant growth to a company logo that evolves through a kind of genetic recombination." --- Fast Company

Brilliant
By M. Tierney
Purchased this book after the German edition received rave reviews, now in an English translation. Those familiar with the Processing programming language probably need no introduction to this book, which is why there probably aren't any reviews (I dare say it doesn't need any). Still, I thought I would share an opinion.

This really is a beautiful book, a chest of techniques, methods and examples for working through the Processing language in the context of generative design. It's broken into two sections, with the first quarter of the book devoted to glossy full color 'plates' (if u like), surveying artists working in the generative design field. The rest of the book is dedicated to the Processing language, broken into two sections - basic examples, and then more complex methods.

The textbook pages have a non-glossy paper feel, which in and of themselves are a lovely texture and weight. In particular the binding of the book is something of an achievement - each page seems to fall gently over the next, leaving an open book that never needs much creasing or pressing to get the spine to lay flat. It is a heavy book, so probably best set next to a computer and a cup of coffee as you wade through the many examples.

It has to be said that the examples here are also (expectedly) beautiful, and unlike other programming books, they don't resort to a uninspiring aesthetic or to ugly sketches that no one wants to code. The sketches in this book are simply gorgeous and the kind of thing that probably made you want to get started with Processing in the first place.

The layout is also fantastic, with clear pointers to what each part of the code means and does, not to mention great full color representations of the sketches variations.

It's very hard for me not to recommend this book to any Processing programmer, or to any beginning Processing user, but I would have to say it might not be the best place to start. Having said that if you're interested in Processing or Generative Design you should go out and buy this book right now, it will leave you inspired for months and maybe years.

If you're just starting out then obviously the Processing website, examples and reference are a great starting point, as well as the Processing book by Reas & Fry. Following on from there Generative Design is like a more advanced text to the Reas and Fry version. Coupled with the examples provided on the companion website (freely downloadable), and the fact they upgraded the code in this English text to Processing 2.0 really make this text a current and useful tool.

And while I do love the artist pages at the beginning of the book I can't help but feel it wouldn't have been a loss if they were omitted. That's just a personal opinion (and my reason for 4 stars), as the focus for me here and the real attraction to the book is the 'textbook' part. If anything it would have made it more 'backpackable' - enabling it to be taken on the go with less strain on the shoulders.

I've yet to scour the book from end to end so this is more of general vibe of what it's like in person.

An absolutely fabulous text and a book worth keeping for life, that will certainly sit as a crucial text in the processing lineage along with DBN, Creative Code and the Processing Programming Handbook.

A great book for learning Processing
By R. Elder
I'm only 1/2 way through this book. I bought it (after hesitating due the the textbook high pricing) because it was highly recommended by students and instructors alike in a Intro to Computational Arts course I took recently online (via SUNY). It is a beautiful book and so well organized. The only knock is I wish in some cases it would give fuller code examples in some of the more involved sketches. I find by typing the code snippets as it is being broken down and explained is a very useful way to 'experience' and learn to code. I've been working with Processing for a long time and it is one of the best for both explaining the use of the Processing language and framing it with in context of Graphic Arts and design principles. Another example and perhaps a bit more accessible to people new to coding is Matt Perason's Generative Art: a practical guide using Processing. This book Generative Design: Visualize, Program and Create with Processing has been a great 'next' step (more advance) text and reference. It is organized by some basic design concepts (the use of color, shape, agents (interaction) and also has about 1/2 of the text devoted to Complex Methods (exploring randomness, noise, attractors, oscillation, etc). In the end this is a book I will go back to many many times and has been surprisingly well worth the price.

An all-around amazing book on generative design
By J. French
This is definitely one of my favorite books on yes, Processing - but also simply a beautifully designed book in its own right. It's even worthwhile simply as a collection of inspiring generative art, even if you have know interest in learning the code from a practical level. If you do however, you're in for even more of a treat, because the code examples are laid out beautifully. As a designer, it's amazingly refreshing to see educational material treated in a way that is both easy to understand, and aesthetically pleasing. The visual examples are diverse and inspiring, and the code is explained in a way that is relatively straightforward to understand. It's helpful if you have a fundamental understanding of Processing (or coding in general), but because it's broken apart so well, you don't need to understand everything to be able to grasp the core functionality.

There are other books that are better for teaching basic concepts in a methodical way (Daniel Shiffman does a great job with Learning Processing and then The Nature of Code), but this book is great to add to the collection for its variety of inspiring examples. Most of the works have walkthroughs of the code side by side, and the actual source code is available to download as well. If you're interested in Processing or generative art, I can't recommend this book enough.

Everything Eric Lofholm does shows his heart. The book is a short read, but it continually gives insight - just like Eric. This is one of the best values in books on selling.

Considering Eric had the same sales coach in his early days that Jay Abraham and Spike Humer and others have used in the past, Eric insights definitely come from very good stock

"Bad can feel good, Jessie. Bad can feel as good as it can get."

The tattoos covering Eden Reece’s arm tell the tale of a con with an appetite for danger. Even so, arriving at The Circus – the criminal heart of Blackthorn – and demanding an audience with the notorious Pummel, is the sign of a death wish.

Jessie knows that Eden is trouble. Serious trouble. Held captive by Pummel, despite her powers, she also knows how dangerous a game Eden is playing. Yet she can’t ignore a connection far deeper than the physical spark between them – because Jessie has seen Eden before...

Jessie is the only one who can help Eden save those he loves. But as he uncovers her secrets one by one, he can’t ignore the emotions she stirs in him – feelings neither of them dare face. He risks death. If she trusts him, she risks a fate far worse.

As Pummel’s twisted plans become clear, there’s no doubt all hell risks breaking out in Blackthorn. With time running out, together Jessie and Eden might be the only ones who can stop it.

In a thrillingly sensual novel, the stakes in the dark world of Blackthorn just got higher.

Nearly Perfect
By Mdi
Good series. I do want to ask Lindsay to hire an editor to handle typos and to help with the abundance of backstory-especially in book 4. I found myself skipping pages so I could get to where the story moves forward again. I like that her female characters are capable and strong and the way the tough male leads can be soft with them.. The sex scenes are delicious, though, perhaps too frequent so they become page fillers, just like backstory is. I am really hoping that the next one in this series is all about the rich story line she tends to give only a fraction of the books to. It's a great premise and she has set up some very interesting conflicts and crises to be resolved. VERY clever having it end with the little one saying what she said on the last page. I want to buy Lindsay's next book and have it be all about the climax and resolution of the Big Story that will bring all these couples she has created, into some kind of singular effort together. Not that the romance part isn't lovely. It is. But Lindsay has serious action fiction writing chops that are held back by writing for only the paranormal romance reader looking for para-normals having human sex. She could kick some serious ass in the same vein as the Underworld stories (ala Kate Beckinsale)- which do have a small romance story line but heavy on the intrigue and action. They have sex. They fall in love. Yes. Yes. We know. Do what you do best, Lindsay and tell us what they live for and what they are willing to die for.

Compelling like all the books from this series!

it is impossible that a series can get so much better with each new book without taking away from the previous books but this one does! If that sounds confusing to anyone reading this review then please read on as I would love to have you understand.

Sometimes in a series, or even in stand alone books by the same author we compare. It is only natural. However with this series and this author the lines blur in our thinking and in what is happening in the series, and it is hard to make that distinction as each book is so powerful but different. It is not that each book is better but rather each book escalates in reader connection as the whole story begins to come together, and our couples stand out even more as their part of the puzzle suddenly makes sense. Eden and Jessie bring this to a head.

Eden is a drug you can become easily addicted to. Of all our heroes he is the most normal and yet his strength, his ability to do what has to be done, his love for family and the way he succumbs to Jessie because he sees who she is has us drooling. In turn Jessie is just as captivating a character and more likeable than the previous women have been, and that is not an easy feat at all. Despite her third species origin and power it is her 'humanity' that wins us and Eden over, and it is their growing love for each other that strikes deep into our hearts. They want a better world for each other and for the world itself just like the previous couples do although at the time they may not be aware of it. It is in allowing themselves to be vulnerable to someone else that brings this into existence.

if all of this was enough to keep us glued to the page the unfolding events are so dramatic, so horrifying as they expose greed and extraordinary selfishness and brutality, and so precarious that we can only hope the next book is close. The ability to write is what has us believing in creatures that we shouldn't believe in, the ability to world-build has us enthralled hook, line and sinker, and the steaminess of lust mingled with love has us squirming much like our heroines in reaction to the incredible men they have attracted.

I could say I can't wait for the next book but the truth is I can. If it is as good as the previous books then it will be worth the wait. If you think you may doubt this then read the little teaser at the end of this novel and you will retract those thoughts immediately.

Dark and stunning!
By Tracey
Bad does feel good. So very good in this latest enthralling instalment of the Blackthorn series.

My initial response when I finished Blood Deep (well when I managed to rejoin reality several hours of recovery later!), was that this is the best book in the series. However, that would be an injustice to the three previous books of brilliance. The Blackthorn series is simply getting more and more addictive, with a plot that gets stronger and more compelling with each page turn. It’s hard to compare all the books in the series as the author offers something fresh in each one of them, while maintaining the integrity of the world building of Blackthorn.

In Blood Deep you are taken into the depths of Blackthorn where ‘bad’ is a way of life and humans are as much of a threat as the third species are. The lowest of the low are sent to Blackthorn, and Eden Reece is intent on fitting right in where trouble resides. Eden’s tattooed arms are proof that he is a worthy resident at The Circus, and of what he is capable of. Pretty soon he gains the attention of Pummel, the most feared criminal in The Circus.

Jessie saved Eden once, so why didn’t he heed her warnings to escape while he could? Something she can never do. No one riles Pummel and gets away with it, but Eden seems to push each of his buttons. She doesn’t know what Eden’s plans are, but only that it won’t end well. And if they don’t ignore the spark between them, it can only get worse.

Eden will do anything to succeed with his plans, and he stoops to depths so low to achieve his goals that you can only applaud him when you discover the reason behind his determination. Jessie is a big part of that plan, but she’s hiding secrets too. Secrets that involve the prophecy.

I adored Jessie. I was desperate to discover her secrets and I must admit I squealed a little when I did. Her story is heart breaking and when she meets Eden you so want Eden to be her hero, even if he doesn’t appear to be hero material at all. Except he is. This was where the emotion got me when Eden’s back story is revealed. Oh my. And this is Blackthorn, so Jessie and Eden are in for one heck of a bumpy ride. They jump from one heart pounding ‘oh heck’ moment and straight into the next one. Lindsay J. Pryor doesn’t just glide over boundaries, she tramples right over them. The story moves along at pace, and with a few familiar faces joining the fray and more revelations made, it makes this a stunning read. The darkest and sexiest yet.

Pure genius!

Hiraeth: a mark - marc, by Liz Riley Jones

Mona Jones has been on the run all her life without really knowing why. Her parents were murdered, and now, at twenty-one, her uncle and protector is dead too…

This dramatic chain of events compels Mona to spend time amid a Welsh-speaking community in Ynys Mn, also known as Anglesey. It is here that her druidic ancestry begins to emerge, identified more quickly by those around her. Attacked by an enemy druid, Mona quickly finds herself at the centre of an intense druid civil war.

Branded with 'the mark', she unleashes her power, only to discover she also has a terrible weakness. Mona quickly finds herself drawn to the warrior Cai, but they are soon separated when the community's fleet is lured out to sea by the threat of an Irish attack. With the Welsh druids convinced she is a spy working amongst them, Mona's uncontrollable power explodes for a second time.

The Welsh druids must decide if Mona is their saviour or their destroyer.

A fast-moving, contemporary action story, Hiraeth is a trilogy inspired by the ancient Celtic texts of the Mabinogion and the Ulster Cycle. The story has been woven into an epic power struggle, which straddles myth, Celtic identity and adventure.

Gripping! Strong Characters, and a Great Read.
By Senlui
The reader is thrown into the action straight away, and rarely do you find yourself so emotionally moved for characters that you have just met as in "Hiraeth: a mark". From then on, you follow the main character, Mona, as she is abandoned in a community that is seemingly hostile to her. Intrigue and suspense fill the pages, when you learn of what the community really is all about.

Liz manages to blend Celtic myth of the Mabinogion into a contemporary world in a way that is not "New Age" or awkward. The characters are all well developed and interesting, and the settings are well researched. The story reminds me more of a science fiction than a fantasy book, and there is nothing fluffy about the novel. Indeed it is sometimes hard-hitting and difficult, but these scenes are certainly necessary and not gratuitous.

After reading "a mark", I certainly can't wait to get hold of the next part to find out what happens. The book ends at a point when the storm is brewing, and leaves the reader eager to see the result of the events of the story so far.

Leaves its Mark!
By Leon N Robins
A really good read. An action-packed start followed by intrigue as the main character, Mona, begins to learn more about the life she has been born into. It is hard to pin down to a genre - probably fantasy adventure is the nearest I can come up - but its more nuanced than that with its present day setting. The author has created a believable world of ancient Druids surviving in the modern day and on the fringes of Celtic society. Forget about your white robes and hippy stuff - this has warriors, battles, treachery and a community under siege. It is ancient traditions versus modern technology. Its kick-ass heroine has (literally) a killer touch - though she's not always the brightest. The relationship/love story between Mona and Cai is gripping and underpins the narrative - whether it will survive their forced separation is left unresolved in this book! Well worth a read.

I've read it 4 times already, & will read again!
By Lisa
I loved reading this! The timeframe within the story is relatively short, however, the development of the characters and their locations blossom tremendously throughout, making you feel that you've lived a lifetime with them. There is action, comedy, suspense, geography, history, Welsh, martial arts, magic, drama, life, death, coming of age, love, and intimacy. In addition, the author does a fine job of describing the scenery. Whether it's a dreary old room, a car, pasture, or some of the magnificent sights around the coast of Britain, I truly felt like I was right there in each place. The reader is drawn in right from the first page, none of this 'oh, once you get into the second chapter it really gets good.' I feel this review does not do the book enough justice. I am counting the days until the release of the second book!

An easily overlooked GEM!
By gnosisguy
In researching material for a book project that pertains to the ancient antediluvian world, it was inevitable that the "Atlantean" mythos would find its way onto my reading list. I had recently finished reading "Gateway to Atlantis" by Andrew Collins (published in 2000) and found that one his references was "The Shadow of Atlantis" by Alexander Braghine; for whatever reason I was intrigued enough to order the book.
I was not sure what to expect from a book that was originally published in 1940 (this edition published 1997) and expected its content to be somewhat dated. I was pleasantly surprised by the wealth of information and insight to this lost chapter of our past. The etymology alone of particular words & names is priceless, as well as the depth of research and the "pre-PC" forthrightness which is somewhat refreshing. The lost continent of Atlantis and Atlantean theories in general was not on my radar, although the concept is intriguing and one should keep an open mind. I'm quickly becoming a convert and am finding that there is so much more to mankinds past than we've been led to believe by mainstream historians and academics. If you are a student of Atlantean theory then you will appreciate this book, one that otherwise might be overlooked for much more recent fare. For holding up and being relevant for over 70 years, I'm compelled to give this book 5 stars.

A down-to-earth pladoyer for the myth of Atlantis
By assmann@zeiss.co.jp
This book was a fun to read, though I am quite suspicious towards people who seemingly try to convince the reader of the very existence of Atlantis. And here is the thing: the author does not. Instead I was surprised how calm the authors is in trying to prove the case for the sunken continent thereby astonishingly using facts, that were reestablished only after the radio-carbon dating method was invented after the war. (don`t forget this book was written in the 30s). Though no piece of evidence has ever been found, no dagger, no tablet, no piece of paper..., but the author does a terrific job for his time to dwell on old legends of this planet`s people who tell of visitors from other continents, from islands vanished and so on, thereby accidently proving something that has long been thought impossible: the very crossing of the Atlantic ocean by Europeans as well as Africans. In summery the authors leaves the existence of Atlantis to the imagination of the reader, but instead does a terrific job at pointing at the paths, that lead to the myth.

Becoming Agile: ...in an imperfect world, by Greg Smith, Ahmed Sidky

Many books discuss Agile from a theoretical or academic perspective. Becoming Agile takes a different approach and focuses on explaining Agile from a case-study perspective. Agile principles are discussed, explained, and then demonstrated in the context of a case study that flows throughout the book. The case study is based on a mixture of the author's real-world experiences.

Becoming Agile also focuses on the importance of adapting Agile principles to the realities of your environment. In the early days of Agile, there was a general belief that Agile had to be used in all phases of a project, and that it had to be used in its purest form. Over the last few years, reputable Agile authorities have begun questioning this belief: We're finding that the best deployments of Agile are customized to the realities of a given company.

Becoming Agile discusses the cultural realities of deploying Agile and how to deal with the needs of executives, managers, and the development team during migration. The author discusses employee motivation and establishing incentives that reward support of Agile techniques.

Review
Praise for Becoming Agile...

"I would award this excellent guide and virtual consultant an almost perfect nine out of ten review, and recommend it to any organization seeking to intelligently adopt Agile Practices."
--Slashdot.org Online Review 11/16/2009

"This is a very detailed roadmap that takes you from the initial "is Agile right for me?" stage through completion and delivery of your pilot project and beyond."
-Charlie Griefer, Senior Software Engineer, Amcom Technology

"Clear, concise and has plenty of example scenarios that many individuals and corporations would identify with."
-Jamie Phillips, Senior Software Engineer, Picis Inc

"Becoming Agile in an Imperfect World offers a different and useful look at Agile methods. Reminding us that becoming agile is more of a mindset adjustment than a process change, Sidky and Smith use a case study to share their insights and tools throughout the book."
-Sanjiv Augustine, President, LitheSpeed LLC and author of Managing Agile Projects

"The book totally inspired me. Becoming Agile helps take you to the next level by going beyond the theory and into the nitty gritty practicality of employing the Agile approach.
-Tariq Ahmed, author of Flex 3 in Action

"This book is a necessity for teams looking to become agile..."
--Randy Miller, Software Project Recovery Expert, Microsoft

"The first book I can give to anyone on an agile team, regardless of their role."
--Paul King, Director, ASERT

"A 5-star guide."
--Robert Dempsey, CEO, Atlantic Dominion Solutions

Wouldn't recommend this book.
By Bas Vodde
Becoming Agile by Greg Smith and Ahmed Sidky describes how to start your journey to start agile development. The target audience for this book are people who are just starting to look at Agile development and currently have issues. However, personally, I would not recommend this book. The book contains recommendations that I would personally not follow (I'm not that they wouldn't work) and a better alternative might be Mike Cohns new book "Succeeding with Agile" which will be published later this year.

The book contains eight parts and it follows one case study of "Acme Media" throughout the book. Acme media is implementing a small pilot project using agile development. The first chapter of the book describes agile development, the agile manifesto and introduces the background of the case study. The second chapter in the book covers the start, that is the preparation work that the authors recommend. Chapter 4 in this part discusses a assessment test for assessing your agility. The authors recommend to use the test and based on that decide what practices to start with. Chapter 6 describes one of the their key recommendations, which is to form a "core team" which defines the agile process to be used by the organization.

Part three describes the real kick-off of the development. Chapter 10 covers a feasibility phase where the a smaller team will assess if the project is even feasible and after that will be a "gate" or a go/no-go moment so that the project can be killed early. It suggests creating a feasibility study guide to do your feasibility and the authors provide some examples. Chapter 11 talks about creating the initial agile pilot team.

Part four is called "populating the product backlog" where the authors start describing their variant on user stories called "feature cards." It wasn't clear to me why the authors decided to re-invent or rename other agile practices. The chapter describes creating the feature cards and putting them in the product backlog. Chapter 13 discusses the prioritization and chapter 14 the estimation of the features (which seems to be the wrong order to me, but the authors insist on not wasting estimation time). The chapter explains planning poker and story point (wonder why they are not called feature points...)

Part five then discusses the planning (or scheduling) of the project and fills all the requirements to the iterations. Chapter sixteen then starts with the iteration planning of the first iteration. The authors suggest first some modeling and than task breakdown and already doing task assignments. They not that people often recommend differently, but then they assume that it because in these teams "everyone can do everything." It feels like the authors think it is either pre-assigning all tasks OR everyone can do everything... and there is no middle way.

Part six discusses the iteration itself and covers some of the agile engineering practices, but only on a somewhat shallow level. The part starts with chapter 17 which still recommends to run an iteration 0 (even though their project has only 2 iterations!!) Part seven discusses change and adaptation. Chapter 20 describes the adaptations of Acme and why they did it. Interestingly enough, the authors suggest a "adapt week" between their iterations. Then chapter 21 describes the final delivery.

Part eight, the final part, describes how the core group can take the result of the pilot and try to roll out agile in the whole company.

Why I wouldn't recommend the book? There are two main reasons for this. The first is that the book doesn't feel well researched at all and the language is somewhat too 'popular.' For example: page 6 about the Agile manifesto talks about "a group of authors writing a document." Unless you interpret 'authors' very broadly, this is just not true. On page 33 the authors describe weaknesses of Scrum. I'm probably not the most neutral person about this, but still the sentence "Scrum doesn't want specialists" seems like a really odd conclusion and seems to me simply untrue. Another example, on page 248 the authors equate exploratory testing to "company-wide bug stomp." They claim "exploratory testing tries to make sure the software doesn't accidentally do things it isn't supposed to do." If I simply google the internet, then the definitions of exploratory testing are quite different. As a final example, in chapter 22 on retrospectives, the authors do not at all refer to any of the retrospectives techniques described in other places (like the popular "Agile Retrospectives" book).

The second reason why I wouldn't recommend the book is because I personally disagree with a lot of the recommendations done by the authors. These are too numerous to all mention, but to just pick a couple. Having a separate team define the 'process' for the Agile team seems odd to me. Doing a pilot project with only 2 iterations is somewhat short from my perspective. Especially as things like velocity aren't that useful on projects like that. The iteration 0 and the adapt week are things I wouldn't recommend and certainly not on a 2 iteration project. The description of retrospectives are certainly not how I would do them myself. The focus on engineering practices is somewhat shallow. And the list goes on and on. Fair enough, this might be just my opinion against their opinion, but because of this, I would personally not recommend this book.

I decided to go for two stars. Three stars would mean the book does what it is suppose to do, and I don't think it does. One star would be too low as the idea of the book is good. Also, I like the way the authors have build up their case study and the way they describe a project based on their own experiences. The book is not all bad or useless, just not the book I would recommend. Therefore decided to go for two stars.

Helpful and insightful read for anyone planning on going Agile
By James Phillips
I will be honest and say that this is the first "work related" book that actually captured my attention to the point that I would sit and read whilst my loved ones were enjoying their sweet slumber (and obviously blog about it).

This book is highly informative; being neither condescending, nor pushy and over-bearing on the way that agile adoption should be approached. Without intending to be a partisan; I would even go as far as saying that it is more than recommended reading, it should be required reading for anyone thinking of migrating to agile; recent adoptees of agile or anyone in between.

From the first chapters that guide us through the principles (I loved the annotated 12 principles of the Manifesto for Agile Software Development - section 1.1.2) and the descriptive text on the "paradigm shift from a plan-driven mentality"; to the readiness assessments and the importance of obtaining executive support; through to the population of the product backlog and on to the first iterations of an example company adopting Agility in their software development process.

There is no substitute for actually reading the book, which is a must; however various chapters and sections drew my attention more than others.

Section 1.1.2 - The agile principles:

Although the manifesto has been analyzed and described on various blogs and books; the descriptive text for each principle was really handy when evangelizing on agile and is a good primer for anyone new to the subject (and possibly even for those of us who have been practicing agile).

Section 1.2 - A paradigm shift from a plan-driven mentality:

This is a must read for those of us who have come from years of waterfall and attempts at changes to "traditional" methodologies or processes. The section highlights the change in mentality that is needed to move from more traditional ways of software development to a leaner, more agile way.

Section 2.4 - What does it look like when a team "becomes agile":

With comparative plan related diagrams of how the change is made from waterfall to agile and the breakdown of how that transition was made; is comforting for those that have made the change as well as those that are thinking about/planning the change.

Section 3.2 - The different flavors of agile:

This section has a really good breakdown of strengths and weaknesses of the two foremost agile methods; Scrum and XP.

Section 3.3 - Create your own flavor to become agile within your constraints:

When I first started in agile there seemed to be a common mantra that permeated throughout the meetings and blogs that effectively stated if you weren't doing it exactly by the book, you weren't being agile. It is completely preposterous.
How can the same agile development methods used by a web advertising company be cookie-cut for a software company writing client server applications in a strong regulatory environment? The answer is - it can't. There will need to be some adaptation. After all isn't that one of the principle concepts of agile; what is the point of having Sprint Retrospectives to adjust and tweak a process in a constant attempt to improve? This section is a must read for those that are constantly being belittled or set-upon by "those in the know".

Chapter 4 - The fitness test: all about readiness assessments:

Although I have not had the opportunity of actually performing this exercise; having read through the chapter it is very informative and goes in to great detail on how a company can be measured for it's fitness to adopt agile development.

Section 6.3.1 - Tough questions:

I liked this section because of the example of typical questions asked by the team that will be adopting agile development and the possible answers to give about the migration process.

Section 7.1.1 - Attributes of a good coach:

This section contains a very good breakdown of the attributes that should be sought when selecting an agile coach. The following sections go into further detail about training and coaching; as well as details on the interaction with managers and stakeholders.

Section 7.3 - Creating a team with an agile mindset:

This section explains what ingredients are needed to create a sound agile team; from "Culture and roles" through to "Characteristics that influence individual performance".

Chapter 8 - Injecting agility into your current process:

Just the title alone gives the idea of the maturity of mind that the authors have when confronting a company wanting to adopt agile development methods. From documenting the existing process (not everyone has it written in stone and perhaps not all aspects of the company are actually doing what it says in the process hand-book); to deciding what to keep and what to change.

Chapters 9, 10 and 11

Discuss the selection of a pilot project and the team that will be on the pilot project. This is very informative for those companies that have made up their mind to move to agile and are looking around for the best project to guinea pig.

Section 12.3 - Feature cards compared to...:

As a Scrum practitioner it was interesting to read the comparisons between feature cards, user stories, use cases and functional specifications.
Section 12.5 - Hard-copy vs. electronic cards:

I found this section particularly useful as it highlighted the benefits of both, using SharePoint as an example of the electronic format. Although the idea is to keep it as simple as possible I am an advocate of using technology where possible - more than anything to cut down on the waste generated by so much paper; but also for the fact that you can view the information at any time (this is effective when trying to explain PBI or SBI to persons not located in the same area).

Chapter 13 - Prioritizing the backlog:

This is a subject that I find is the least covered in discussions with peers (both at work and outside) and it is really helpful to see the suggestions posed throughout the chapter. Peppered with examples of a product backlog and how to handle various items; this chapter is a good starting point for broadening the discussion.

Chapter 14 - Estimating at the right level with the right people:

I still remember being asked to estimate for a particular requirement when I still felt that I did not have enough information to do a sound enough job of it. How different it is when you are doing it as a team and everyone can voice their thoughts on the matter. This chapter is particularly useful for those still in "traditional" methods or recent adopters of agile methods. Of particular interest is section 14.1 - Contrasting traditional and agile estimation techniques and section 14.2 - The importance of whole-team estimation; both of which ease the reader into the subject that is quite explanatory with regards to the estimation process in agile.

Section 16.3 - Identifying and estimating tasks:

This section has a nice "call-out" titled "Task assignments aren't permanent" that describes how the early stages, specialist people will be suited to certain tasks and how with the passage of time and acquired experience in an agile environment team members will become more capable of taking on varied tasks that perhaps were out of their realm in the beginning.

The latter chapters of the book, starting with chapter 20, describe the process of adapting to change and learning as we go. Section 20.1 - Common reasons for adapting (i.e. make those tweaks mentioned earlier); describes common issues that crop up and some ways that teams adapt to the situation described.
Chapter 22 is particularly interesting with a detailed explanation on how to prepare and manage the retrospective.
Chapter 23 is a must read for companies that have successfully started a pilot project and are now looking at how to push across the divide and bring about change at an enterprise level.

This book is a game changer...
By Tariq Ahmed
I was fortunate to get access to an early version of this book, and as I write this I'm actually going through the book jotting down some key points as our development and project management teams will be meeting to talk about how we can adopt a more agile approach to software development.

We've borrowed a few agile concepts from back in the day, but we're looking to take our game to the next level. And the problem with a lot of the old school agile material is that it is very theoretical from the perspective of agile purists.

Well I don't know about you guys... but it's not that simple. Change takes time, and there are business realities to factor in. You can't take a 5000 ton cargo ship moving at maximum speed to suddenly turn because you want it to.

Businesses have a momentum to them, and to introduce change requires shifting that momentum. This is where the book Becoming Agile is a critical asset to folks like me (technical management), because it addresses these realities head on and provides a practical and viable approach from a business process perspective on how to get your teams developing in an agile manner.

I really can't praise this book enough, and I'm aiming to get everyone in our project management and software development teams a copy of this book, and make it our guide.
