This is a decent little area control gateway/filler for history buffs.
PROS: It plays quickly once every player has gone through a game. The production quality is good, 8/10. It feels like Tammany Hall lite.
CONS: A game has the potential to run out of steam if players are too eager and play out their cards too soon. Also, in a 4-player game, if your teammate is poor at reading your turns and evaluating the board, your own strategy may prove fruitless.
Thematically, outcomes are going to conflict with the recorded events, which isn't uncommon in historical war games.

This is a great area control game if played with the right type ...

This is a great area control game if played with the right type of people. The game is a bit cutthroat - so play it with people who enjoy competitive games. I love how the components are so clean and elegant (similar to a micro-game and minimal), but lots of strategy and meta-game guessing how your opponents will react to each others moves. Each player is also limited to 8 identical action cards per game and this limitation of moves makes the experience very interesting to see if a player will make many actions early in the game or later (with all players reacting to however the game is flowing). The King is Dead supports 2, 3 and 4 players and when played with different number of players will give the end result of a very unique experience. 2 players is very head-to-head (like chess). 3 players is a cutthroat free-for-all (best), and 4 players is an interesting 2-vs-2 team game, cause no verbal strategy can be said among team players during the game. Lastly, a free expansion is provided with the game to add even more variety in mechanics when desired.
